NYC Tax Day Tea Party

Finally got all my pictures uploaded from the NYC Tax Day Tea Party Protest which took place at City Hall Park. The turn out was huge, I could not see how far back the crowd went. My guess is there were more than 3,000 people there, maybe more than 4,000 (Update (4/16/2009): NYPD estimated 12,500). I did not see any 'infiltrators' or agitators, but I was pretty deep into the crowd so that does not mean that there were none there. You can see my favorite pictures/signs below. There is a link to all the photos that I took that came out with a few video pan shots below that.

In a related thought, did the Tax Day Tea Party protests crack the million participant number (Berman Post: One Million Strong?)?

Pictures embedded below. Yes there are a lot, but that is because there were a lot of good signs.

  1. Great photos! I was inspired by one of them to create a new photoshop of the Nanny-in-Chief.

(I'd leave a trackback but I'm not sure how. If you'd like to see it, it's here.) Thanks!

  2. El Marco Tea Party photo essay"Evil Right Wing Extremists Who Would Destroy America Gather in Denver"

Text from James Delingpole, Telegraph, U.K.

James Delingpole has written a spot-on critique of the DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis report
“Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment”.
Delingpole's cutting article combines with El Marco's photos to illustrate the Obama administrations folly.

  3. Great photos! Even in the later ones you didn't capture the full scope of this, and I believe we were standing pretty close to one another at one point. I remmember looking back at some point after dark and there were flags waving all the way to the Capitol. I couldn't see how far back the crowd went but it was several blocks. People on stage had the best view, and I wish some of their images get posted.

  4. The lady holding up "We have a right to stop a corrupt government,....sign" is the one I wrote about.

  5. @Tennyson - clever picture, how long did that take you?

@Ex-Dissident - I know I did not capture the full scope of the crowd, not for lack of trying. Despite my spot on a slight ledge, using an outstretched arm and a camera zoomed to the max, I could not see the end of the crowd.

  6. Excellent job! I recognize some people I know. You also captured the size of the crowd. I was down in front and couldn't see that far back. There were crowds across the street from one end to another and around the corner! 12,500 patriotic people. Wow. Pics and must-see videos over at my blog.

Was a great great day for NYC and America.

  7. re: @Tennyson - clever picture, how long did that take you?

Pres. Doubtfire took me an hour plus, maybe even two. There's work involved with silhouetting and compositing but there's also finding suitable source material which takes longer sometimes than it might appear.

For this one I did two faces - the side-facing one I chose for the final version and another more full-face view. That one was downright creepy. Not all ideas are good ones!

A couple of my more well-known and full-blown productions have taken a lot more time, like 6+ hours. It may not be obvious but sometimes that's what it takes.

And then there are the quick n' goofy ones... this is not exactly a masterpiece but I really think I captured the pathos of the poor unfortunate pork, no?

Thanks for posting all these pics, btw. You really captured the energy of the event.
