Chris Matthews (MSNBC) Claims to Live in 'Black Majority' DC, Actually Resides Village With Less Than Ten African Americans (>1%)

Video embedded below.

"Media profiles of Matthews (Washington Post, NY Times) and his wife, former TV reporter and Marriott flack Kathleen (Politico) have reported that the Matthews reside in Chevy Chase, an affluent Maryland suburb.

Kathleen Matthews serves on the board of trustees of the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., which lists its trustees and their addresses online. Based on the addresses provided there, one learns that the Matthews live smack-dab in Chevy Chase Village -- one of the least diverse locales in the country.

According to census data at Maryland-Demographics.com, 1,953 people lived in Chevy Chase Village as of 2010. Of those nearly 2,000 residents, 10 were black. That's right -- ten. As in, one-half of one percent. Ninety-three percent of its residents were white, the remaining percentage other minorities.

Quite a difference between that "black majority" city where Matthews claims he lives and the rarefied swath of suburbia he actually calls home, don't you think?
...
Incidentally, Matthews is also ignorant of the racial demographics of Washington, D.C., itself. Since early 2011, the city has not been majority black, as the New York Times reported in July of that year.

MSNBC Producer Shove Chris Matthews' Hecklers at GOP Convention

Video embedded below.

"A scuffle involving an MSNBC producer and two men who heckled host Chris Matthews was being investigated by security officials Thursday night a few blocks from the Republican National Convention.

Matthews was hosting a show at a makeshift outdoor stage near the Tampa Bay Times Forum after Mitt Romney accepted the GOP presidential nomination. During a break, two men shouted, "Hey Chris, how's that tingle up your leg?" The comment was a reference to Matthews’ 2008 comment that a Barack Obama speech sent a "thrill up his leg."

According to witnesses, a shoving match ensued.

Jack Hitt (Harpers) - 'Republicans Chanting "USA" is Racial Code'

Why is it that journalists assume that everything Republicans do is because they hate minorities? That is a rhetorical question, and I think these comments tell us much more about the people who think and utter them then they do about the people they are talking about.

http://washingtonexaminer.com/liberal-journalists-finding-i.e.-making-up-republican-racism-everywhere/article/2506319

"Meanwhile Jack Hitt at Harpers rolls out a Republicans-are-Racist charge that involves ignoring all the relevant facts.

[A]s a Puerto Rican party functionary—Zoraida Fonalledas, the chairwoman of the Committee on Permanent Organization—took her turn at the main-stage lectern. As she began speaking in her accented English, some in the crowd started shouting “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!”

The chanting carried on for nearly a minute while most of the other delegates and the media stood by in stunned silence. The Puerto Rican correspondent turned to me and asked, “Is this happening?” I said I honestly didn’t know what was happening—it was astonishing to see all the brittle work of narrative construction that is a modern political convention suddenly crack before our eyes. None of us could quite believe what we were seeing: A sea of twentysomething bowties and cowboy hats morphing into frat bros apparently shrieking over (or at) a Latina.

Hitt should have left it at “I honestly didn’t know what was happening.” And his editor should have read that line and decided not to publish the baseless insinuations.

Here’s what happened, Jack:

RNC Chairman Reince Preibus had called for a voice vote to approve the Credential Committee’s report. Ron Paul delegates objected, because the committee had refused to seat half of the Paul delegates. When the voice vote came, the “Noes” clearly were louder than the “Ayes.” (Ron Paul backers are pretty good at shouting.) Preibus ruled that the Ayes had won, and then he ignored many yells of “Point of Order.”

The Paulites began chanting “Point of Order,” trying to stop the proceedings so they could have a roll-call vote or even a debate. They also chanted “Seat Maine Now,” in this period.

Some Romney backers from delegations near Maine responded – for better or worse – by chanting “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” over the Paulites’ chants.

Preibus, meanwhile, was just trying to steamroll ahead, and so he brought on Puerto Rican Republican Zoraida Fonalledas, who tried to speak over the parliamentary objections of the Paulites – and thus over the “U.S.A.!” chants of the Romney backers.

When popular Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz, the GOP nominee for Senate, took the stage, MSNBC cut away from the Republican National Convention and the Hispanic Republican from Texas’ speech.

MSNBC stayed on commercial through former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis’ speech, as well. Davis, who recently became a Republican, is black.

Then, when Puerto Rican Governor Luis Fortuno’s wife Luce’ Vela Fortuño took the stage minutes later, MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews opted to talk over the First Lady’s speech.

Republican Woman For Obama in Obama Ad Turn Out to be ... Democrats

Undoubtedly there are woman out there who voted for McCain and are now supporting Obama. Not as many as are crossing over from Obama to Romney, but I can not imagine that there are none. Faking it in the ad, not a good idea, especially if they fakes are easily discovered as frauds.

First the ad:

Now, the reveal.

"It happens all the time in talk radio: a caller will say that he is a lifelong Republican, and will recall fondly how he voted for Ronald Reagan. Then he says that today’s Republicans have gone too far, and for the first time ever he is voting for a Democrat! These callers are nearly always lying. If you look them up, you likely will find that they are Democratic Party precinct chairmen.

The Obama campaign is trying to perpetrate the same deception. It has just released a video called Republican Women For Obama, which features four or five women who claim to be Republicans, or to have been Republicans until recently. But, of course, they are appalled by Mitt Romney–it is hard to say why, apart from a couple of discreet references to abortion, but did they really just now figure out that the Republican Party is pro-life? The ad is surprisingly ineffective, but it is also dishonest. At least one of the women who pose as “Republican women for Obama” is a long-time Democrat.
...
OK, I’ve broken through on this via Facebook. More of the women are fake “Republicans.” Will do update after lunch!

Romney’s on record repeatedly as saying that he favors exceptions for rape and incest in prospective abortion bans. DWS’s spin: Because Romney’s the nominee and his people kinda sorta get to write the platform — which isn’t binding on him or anyone else — we should ignore his stated position and pretend like he’s no different from Todd Akin. Israel Asks Egypt to Remove Tanks From Sinai

This could go from troubling to terrible in no time flat. Absolutely worth keeping an eye on, especially as Israel seems to be inching closer to launching a strike against Iran.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/22/world/middleeast/israel-asks-egypt-to-remove-tanks-from-sinai.html

"Israel is “troubled” by the entry of Egyptian tanks into the northern Sinai Peninsula without coordination with Israel, a violation of the terms of the 33-year-old peace treaty between the two countries, and has asked Egypt to withdraw them, an Israeli government official said Tuesday.

The Israeli request was conveyed within the last few days, the official said, adding that it was likely that the Obama administration had made a similar approach to Cairo.

The Israeli official was speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the fragility of Israel’s relations with Egypt, already strained by the recent upheavals there. The overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak last year stripped Israel of a trusted regional ally.

$500k of 'Stimulus' Money Spent on Advertising on MSNBC

Half a million dollars spent/paid to friendly media for advertising creating no jobs. Exactly how was this money expected to 'stimulate'?

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/08/22/labor-department-spent-500g-in-stimulus-funds-on-ads-during-olbermann-maddow

"The Obama administration paid a PR firm nearly $500,000 in stimulus funds to run a barrage of ads on White House-friendly cable programs promoting its green job training program.

According to government records, the Labor Department paid the money in late 2009 to a company that negotiated a media buy on MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show." The ad was set to run more than 100 times -- 14 times a week for two months.

It's unclear how many people might have gotten involved in the green job training program because of the ads. But in terms of direct economic impact, the official online entry on the contract listed zero jobs created as a result of the payment.

Romney Grows Cash Advantage on Obama

Romney is raising more and spending less, and for all the money Obama is spending he does not seem to be moving the needle. We will have to wait until after the convention, when Romney is allowed to spend the money from the general election fund, to see if the Romney Death Star still has some kick.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2012/08/20/romney-grows-cash-advantage-on-obama

"Mitt Romney extended his cash edge over President Obama in July and entered the final three-plus months of the campaign with about 50 percent more in the bank than the incumbent president.

Romney led Obama in cash on hand at the end of July $185.9 million to $123.7 million, according to numbers released by the Romney campaign and filed with the FEC by Obama’s campaign.
...
Romney, meanwhile, outraised Obama $101.3 million to $75 million and also spent far less, increasing his cash on hand from $170 million to $185.9 million.
"

Head to the source for a graph.

Todd Akin (R) on "Legitimate Rape"

I can see a moral distinction between between a 17 year old guy and his 18 year old girl friend of three years forgetting to set the clock forward an hour and thus breaking a law, and a man forcing himself on a woman at knife point. That, as far as I can tell, is not the road Akin was traveling down.

What Akin did was announce a breakthrough in (false) medical knowledge whereby a woman can somehow will herself to not get pregnant while being raped, and in the process accusing every woman who did get pregnant from a rape of making the whole thing up. Whatever point Akin was attempting, he succeeded in dealing a likely deathblow to his campaign as well as cause some headaches for his party.

Video embedded below.

"In the clip, Charles Jaco, of St. Louis Fox affiliate KTVI’s “Jaco Report,” asks Akin whether he thinks abortions ought to permissible in a situation where a woman is raped. While explaining his position, Akin claimed that pregnancy only rarely results from “legitimate rape.”

“Well you know, people always want to make it as one of those things where how do you slice this particularly tough, sort of ethical question,” he replied. “It seems to me first of all, from what I understand from doctors — that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But, let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work, or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

Good grief. First, pregnancy from rape isn’t all that uncommon, as Twitchy discovered with just a little research; it’s around 5%. At least one researcher has found that conception rates for rape actually exceeds that of single instances of consensual sex. Second, what in Akin’s mind constitutes legitimate rape?

Obama Campaign Claims They Are Intentionally Limiting Crowd Size at Rallies

Right, and they are telling some people to tell pollsters they are supporting Romney just to make the election more interesting...

http://m.washingtontimes.com/blog/watercooler/2012/aug/18/obama-camp-we-are-intentionally-limiting-crowd-siz (via)

"The presumptive GOP presidential and vice presidential nominees Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan are attracting thousands of supporters to their campaign rallies since Mr. Romney named Mr. Ryan to the bottom of the ticket. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has taken notice of the massive crowds at the Romney Ryan stump speeches and sent out an urgent e-mail to their supporters, reported The Washington Examiner last week.

However, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are not drawing the crowds they once could. The New York Times reported that the Obama campaign said that it is intentionally limiting crowd size at their events because of security and cost:

“We have plenty of time for big rallies,” a campaign spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said between the rallies on Thursday. “Our focus right now is on exciting our supporters and winning over undecided voters and the smaller and medium-size events are the best venue to accomplish that because the president can closely engage with the crowd."

Big rallies are expensive, especially given the logistical and security challenges for a president as opposed to a mere United States senator. And Obama campaign operatives, both at the Chicago headquarters and in swing states where Mr. Obama recently has stumped, say the campaign intentionally limits crowds by restricting tickets. The reason is to allow the president to better connect with supporters, aides say.

The Romney campaign told the New York Times that the smaller turnout at Obama events shows there is an “enthusiasm gap” for Obama.

FBI Probed GOP Trip With Drinking And Nudity in Israel

Sounds like some people may have had a fun trip. Probably inappropriate if they were on official business, but why is the FBI getting involved?

http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=23759F8B-A9C0-46FD-8340-A36018E823D1

"The FBI probed a late-night swim in the Sea of Galilee that involved drinking, numerous GOP freshmen lawmakers, top leadership staff – and one nude member of Congress, according to more than a dozen sources, including eyewitnesses.

During a fact-finding congressional trip to the Holy Land last summer, Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) took off his clothes and jumped into the sea, joining a number of members, their families and GOP staff during a night out in Israel, the sources told POLITICO. Other participants, including the daughter of another congressman, swam fully clothed while some lawmakers partially disrobed. More than 20 people took part in the late-night dip in the sea, according to sources who were participants in the trip.
...
The FBI looked into whether any inappropriate behavior occurred, but the interviews do not appear to have resulted in any formal allegations of wrongdoing.

But Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who was the senior most GOP lawmaker in Israel on the trip, was so upset about the antics that he rebuked the 30 lawmakers the morning after the Aug. 18, 2011, incident, saying they were distracting from the mission of the trip.

Harvard cracks DNA storage, crams 700 terabytes of data into a single gram

Video embedded below.

"A bioengineer and geneticist at Harvard’s Wyss Institute have successfully stored 5.5 petabits of data — around 700 terabytes — in a single gram of DNA, smashing the previous DNA data density record by a thousand times.

The work, carried out by George Church and Sri Kosuri, basically treats DNA as just another digital storage device. Instead of binary data being encoded as magnetic regions on a hard drive platter, strands of DNA that store 96 bits are synthesized, with each of the bases (TGAC) representing a binary value (T and G = 1, A and C = 0).

To read the data stored in DNA, you simply sequence it — just as if you were sequencing the human genome — and convert each of the TGAC bases back into binary. To aid with sequencing, each strand of DNA has a 19-bit address block at the start (the red bits in the image below) — so a whole vat of DNA can be sequenced out of order, and then sorted into usable data using the addresses.

Obama Turns Down Interview With Chris Matthews (MSNBC)

Rumors about Obama's fear of making himself available for a hard hitting interview have been vastly understated...

http://hotair.com/archives/2012/08/17/its-come-to-this-newly-media-shy-president-turned-down-an-interview-with-chris-matthews

"I don’t blame him. What if Tingles surprised him with a tough question about how difficult it is to deal with Republicans?

“I just think it comes down to their overall strategy, which is to be low risk, to play it safe. They feel like they’re ahead and there’s no need to put the president in a position where he makes a mistake,” said former George W. Bush spokesman Trent Duffy, a founding partner of public affairs group HDMK. “They feel like they’ve got it won, and Romney’s got to do something dramatic.”…

“I hate the fact that they have made me worry more about access than reporting. Why build a press briefing room if the president isn’t going to brief the press?” NBC News chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd told POLITICO, who said the White House’s disregard for the press has “reached a new low.” “Both campaigns say the press doesn’t cover them seriously. But the more they cordon us off, the harder it is for us to report on the issues.”…

Obama has even declined an interview with the friendliest liberal outlet on television. Earlier this month, MSNBC’s Chuck Todd sat down with Mitt Romney for a one-on-one interview that will be featured in an hourlong MSNBC documentary that will air prior to the Republican convention. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, who has been very public about his support for Obama, was not granted an interview with the president for the network’s Obama documentary, which will run prior to the Democratic convention. The White House offered Biden instead.

The fact that they offered Obama an interview with a guy who’s face-first in the tank for him instead of asking him to sit with Todd, like Romney did, tells you everything you need to know about partisanship on cable news.

No Executives to be Charged With MF Global And The Disappearance of About $1 Billion in Customer Money

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/331981.php

"Good News: You Can Now Officially Steal $1 Billion From Your Customers And Avoid Proseuction, As Long As You're Hooked Up With the Self-Styled "Party of the Common Man"

Special people have special privileges.

A criminal investigation into the collapse of the brokerage firm MF Global and the disappearance of about $1 billion in customer money is now heading into its final stage without charges expected against any top executives.

After 10 months of stitching together evidence on the firm’s demise, criminal investigators are concluding that chaos and porous risk controls at the firm, rather than fraud, allowed the money to disappear, according to people involved in the case.

I don't know why we're talking about porous risk controls because this is not money which was improvidently invested. This is money which simply vanished.

Shooting at The Family Research Council Headquarters

Fortunately, there were no fatalities. Amazing the difference in reporting when it is a Conservative organization is targeted.

http://hotair.com/archives/2012/08/15/breaking-guard-shot-at-family-research-council-headquarters

"From the Washington Post, it looks like the security guard and several civilians worked together to subdue the shooter, thank God. The guard reportedly was shot in the arm, and is in stable condition.

A security guard at the Family Research Council was shot and wounded Wednesday morning after a scuffle in the lobby of the group’s headquarters in downtown Washington, authorities said.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the shooter walked into the lobby of the building at about 10:45 and was confronted by the security guard as if the guard was asking him where he was going.

The man then took out a gun and opened fire on the guard, Lanier said. The guard and others wrestled the man to the ground, disarmed him and waited for police, she said. The guard was then taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, the chief said.

The shooter is in FBI custody and has not yet been charged, authorities said.

“The security guard here is a hero, as far as I’m concerned,” Lanier said. ”He did his job. The person never made it past the front.”
...
: Fox News reports:

The suspect “made statements regarding their policies, and then opened fire with a gun striking a security guard,” a source told Fox News. WJLA-TV7 reported the suspect was also shot. Sources also said the gunman may have been carrying a bag from Chick-fil-A, the embattled fast-food restaurant whose president came under fire from gay activists after he said he did not agree with same-sex marriage.

Sources told Fox New that after guard took away his gun, the suspect said, “Don’t shoot me, it was not about you, it was what this place stands for.”

Obama - 'Biden's "Chains" Comment Was Taken Out of Context'

Context? The context does not make his comments any better. "Context" is now code for, 'whoops, we really stepped in it again, can we please just forget about this and move on...'.

http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/243919-obama-biden-taken-out-of-context

"President Obama on Wednesday defended Vice President Joe Biden's "chains" comment, saying it was not meant to "connote" anything other than the Wall Street reform he was discussing at a campaign rally.

The vice president made headlines and drew swift criticism from Republicans Tuesday after he told a crowd at a campaign stop in Virginia that Mitt Romney's policies would put "y'all back in chains." The Romney campaign seized on the comment to say that the Obama campaign had hit a new low.

But an "unrattled" Obama told People Magazine the comment was taken out of context and that Biden was discussing that "consumers, the American people, will be a lot worse off it we repeal these [Wall Street reform] laws as the other side is suggesting."

Dishonorable Disclosures

From the YouTube description:

"Intelligence and Special Operations forces are furious and frustrated at how President Obama and those in positions of authority have exploited their service for political advantage. Countless leaks, interviews and decisions by the Obama Administration and other government officials have undermined the success of our Intelligence and Special Operations forces and put future missions and personnel at risk.

The unwarranted and dangerous public disclosure of Special Forces Operations is so serious -- that for the first time ever -- former operators have agreed to risk their reputations and go 'on the record' in a special documentary titled "Dishonorable Disclosures." Its goal is to educate America about serious breaches of security and prevent them from ever happening again.

'One Term More' - Pro-Obama Video

Suddenly I am a lot more confident about Romney winning...

"When even a writer for Mother Jones can’t help but think your attempt at pro-Obama propaganda is problematic, you know you’ve done something wrong. Such is the case with makers of “One Term More,” an Obama-themed parody of “One Day More,“ the famously dramatic Act I finale of the iconic Broadway Musical ”Les Miserables.”

But don’t let the term “parody” fool you. The only humor you will find in this video is purely unintentional. The entire thing is so painfully earnest in its tone-deafness that Nick Baumann, the aforementioned Mother Jones writer, felt the need to send out this Tweet:

Oh, is it ever.

A Romney campaign aide confirms to CNN that Artur Davis will stump for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in the battleground state of Virginia.

Davis, who is black, may be best known for seconding Obama's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in 2008, when he served as an Obama campaign co-chairman. Davis said he had hoped Obama's presidency would make a huge dent in race relations, as well as move the Democratic Party further to the center.

US Fiscal Gap Jumps $11 Trillion to $222 Trillion

The term 'unsustainable' does not do it justice. We are running head long into a fiscal brick wall and instead of pumping the breaks we are figuring out new and better ways to speed up. We will stop eventually, hopefully before we slam into the wall.

http://hotair.com/archives/2012/08/09/great-news-the-us-fiscal-gap-just-jumped-11-trillion-to-222-trillion

"Forget the trillion-dollar deficits for a moment. Forget today’s $15 trillion in national debt. The real fiscal disaster isn’t our present — it’s our future, and it just got significantly worse. Bloomberg economists Laurence Kotlikoff and Scott Burns report that our “fiscal gap,” the measure of future liabilities to future revenue, grew by the same amount as our present public debt to reach $222 trillion. That’s trillion with a T:

Republicans and Democrats spent last summer battling how best to save $2.1 trillion over the next decade. They are spending this summer battling how best to not save $2.1 trillion over the next decade.

In the course of that year, the U.S. government’s fiscal gap — the true measure of the nation’s indebtedness – rose by $11 trillion.

The fiscal gap is the present value difference between projected future spending and revenue. It captures all government liabilities, whether they are official obligations to service Treasury bonds or unofficial commitments, such as paying for food stamps or buying drones. …

The U.S. fiscal gap, calculated (by us) using the Congressional Budget Office’s realistic long-term budget forecast — the Alternative Fiscal Scenario — is now $222 trillion. Last year, it was $211 trillion. The $11 trillion difference — this year’s true federal deficit — is 10 times larger than the official deficit and roughly as large as the entire stock of official debt in public hands.

What is the main driver of this fiscal gap? Mainly, it’s the entitlement liabilities that we have been multiplying for the last eighty years. When 78 million Americans in the Baby Boomer generation retire, the resulting liabilities will take a whopping 85% of per-capita GDP to satisfy. Trillion-dollar deficits are unsustainable; this is flat-out unattainable. There is simply no way that the US can or will meet those obligations, even if we have another population boom, which seems unlikely. It’s practically the textbook definition of an empty promise.

Obama Wants to Repeat The Auto Industry Bailout 'Success' With Every Industry

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/331789.php

"And thus he announces his intent is in fact to create a corporatist/socialist partnership with every large employer in the US.

“I said, I believe in American workers, I believe in this American industry, and now the American auto industry has come roaring back,” he said. “Now I want to do the same thing with manufacturing jobs, not just in the auto industry, but in every industry.
“I don’t want those jobs taking root in places like China, I want those jobs taking root in places like Pueblo,” Obama told a crowd gathered for a campaign rally at the Palace of Agriculture at the Colorado State Fairgrounds here.

Politico has now "fixed" the story, because they claim they were "unclear" about Obama's intent, about his main thrust. Although they don't say so, they're attempting to now say Obama did not mean he wants to heavily invest government money in every industry -- even though his actual examples are about precisely that (subsidies for the wind farm industry, for example).

Over 100 Million Now Receiving Federal Welfare

Closing in on the tipping point...

http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/over-100-million-now-receiving-federal-welfare_649589.html

""The federal government administers nearly 80 different overlapping federal means-tested welfare programs," the Senate Budget Committee notes. However, the committee states, the figures used in the chart do not include those who are only benefiting from Social Security and/or Medicare.

Food stamps and Medicaid make up a large--and growing--chunk of the more than 100 million recipients. "Among the major means tested welfare programs, since 2000 Medicaid has increased from 34 million people to 54 million in 2011 and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) from 17 million to 45 million in 2011," says the Senate Budget Committee. "Spending on food stamps alone is projected to reach $800 billion over the next decade."

ObamaCare to Raise The Cost of Your Next Pizza Delivery

It may not seem like much, but these tin increases add up quick when they are applied to everything you buy. Beyond the tax increases, ObamaCare will cost you in these increased costs.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/07/papa-johns-obamacare-pizza_n_1752126.html

"After President Obama's health care law takes full effect, the slogan for national pizza chain Papa John's may need an update. Instead of, “Better ingredients. Better Pizza,” may we suggest, “Better health care. Pricier pizza."

Papa John's CEO John Schnatter says that Obamacare will result in a $0.11 to $0.14 price increase per pizza, or $0.15 to $0.20 cents per order, Pizza Marketplace, a trade publication, reports. (Hat tip: @dkberman via Twitter.)

Under Obamacare, the company, which is the third-largest pizza takeout and delivery chain in the United States, will have to offer health care coverage to more of its 16,500 total employees or pay a penalty to the government.

The National Restaurant Association pointed out following the health care law's Supreme Court approval that it may adversely affect restaurants’ ability to maintain already slim profit margins because it requires companies of more than 50 employees to provide affordable health insurance.

Obama Officials Caught Lying to Congress About Delphi Pension Termination?

The email trail says yes...

http://dailycaller.com/2012/08/07/emails-geithner-treasury-drove-cutoff-of-non-union-delphi-workers-pensions

"Emails obtained by The Daily Caller show that the U.S. Treasury Department, led by Timothy Geithner, was the driving force behind terminating the pensions of 20,000 salaried retirees at the Delphi auto parts manufacturing company.

The move, made in 2009 while the Obama administration implemented its auto bailout plan, appears to have been made solely because those retirees were not members of labor unions.

The internal government emails contradict sworn testimony, in federal court and before Congress, given by several Obama administration figures. They also indicate that the administration misled lawmakers and the courts about the sequence of events surrounding the termination of those non-union pensions, and that administration figures violated federal law.

Mars Rover “Curiosity” Lands On Mars

L'chaim (to life)...?

http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2012/08/mars-rover-curiosity-has-landed-on-mars

"What an amazing scientific feat by NASA geniuses. Weighing 2,000 pounds and approximating the size of a car, the rover “Curiosity” has successfully landed on Mars.

Reuters explained the goal of this mission,

The Mars rover Curiosity, on a quest for signs the Red Planet once hosted ingredients for life, closed in on fringe of the Martian atmosphere on Sunday for a make-or-break landing attempt that NASA calls one of the toughest feats of robotic spaceflight.

Curiosity, the first full-fledged mobile science laboratory sent to a distant world, was scheduled to touch down inside a vast, ancient impact crater on Sunday at 10:31 p.m. Pacific time (1:31 a.m. EDT on Monday/0531 GMT on Monday).

Mission control engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Los Angeles acknowledge that delivering the one-ton, six-wheeled, nuclear-powered vehicle in one piece is a highly risky proposition, with zero margin for error.

But less than an hour away from Curiosity’s rendezvous with Mars, JPL’s team said the spacecraft and its systems were functioning flawlessly, and forecasts called for favorable Martian weather over the landing zone.

After a journey from Earth of more than 350 million miles (567 million km), engineers said they were hopeful the rover, the size of a small sports car, will land precisely as planned near the foot of a tall mountain rising from the floor of Gale Crater in Mars’ southern hemisphere.

Update: According to the NASA engineers on NASA’s live Ustream, the first images came through and they report that “everything looks great”!

"As of the 5 PM eastern briefing from the local Chief of Police, there is confirmation that there are 7 dead and 3 others injured. The police will not be releasing the names of any of the victims nor the police officer who was shot until all family members have been notified. They are treating this as an in process criminal investigation and an “active scene” and they will not be releasing the identity of the shooter. They are treating it as an incident of “domestic terrorism” and the FBI is taking over the investigation on that end. There will be another briefing tomorrow morning at 10 AM, but until then we probably shouldn’t expect much more in terms of details."

Obama - 'Jets Fans Should be Nervous About Tebow Trade'

Getting involved in sports, not always the best of ideas. As for the Jets, given Obama's track record, I would say they have a decent chance of going all the way.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/nfl-rapidreports/19714180/president-obama-weighs-in-on-jets-qb-tim-tebow

"Is President Barack Obama taking a page out of Richard Nixon's playbook? In 1971, President Nixon suggested a play for the Redskins before their playoff game with the 49ers. On Thursday, more than 40 years later, Obama opined on the Jets trade for QB Tim Tebow.

In an interview with 97.3 The Fan, a radio station in Columbus, Ohio, Obama said he thought Jets fans should be "nervous" about the trade and that he was not in favor of a quarterback controversy to start the season. He said that QB Mark Sanchez is "not Tom Brady yet," but he
pointed out that he did lead the Jets to two consecutive AFC Championship games.

Obama Suing to Hinder Military Voting in Ohio

This has the potential to be used as a bludgeoned against Obama; the Commander in Chief actively actively trying to make it more difficult for military members to vote. I do not think his excuse is going to mitigate much.

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2012/08/obamas-anti-military-stance-in-ohio.php

"Under current Ohio law, the period during which voters can cast their ballot early ends three days before the election. However, the law has an exception for members of the military. They are allowed to vote early right up until election day.

The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee have filed a lawsuit to overturn this law. They argue that it is arbitrary and unconstitutional to afford special consideration, flexibility, and accommodations to military voters to make it easier for them to vote in person. In court papers, Team Obama repeatedly asserts that there is no good reason to give special flexibility to military voters.

Fifteen Ohio military groups have intervened in the lawsuit to defend the Ohio legislature’s decision to give special consideration to military members. They argue that there are valid reasons for the consideration, such as special logistical challenges faced by military personnel. And they call Obama’s position that military members should not have extra flexibility “offensive.”

Team Romney is attempting to gain political mileage from the Obama campaign’s legal position. However, Obama’s spokesmen, including David Axelrod, defend that position on the grounds that they are not attempting to deny military members the extra three days. Rather, they want to restore prior Ohio law, under which all voters could vote on those days, not just military members. And they complain that the Romney campaign is misrepresenting the Democrats’ position.

But, as noted, Team Obama’s legal position is clear from its court papers — it doesn’t believe that there is anything that justifies giving military members extra fleixibility when it comes to voting. Indeed, it finds the contrary, pro-military view so weak as to render unconstitutional the special consideration granted to military members.

Not surprisingly, it is not just Team Romney that takes exception to this position. As noted, 15 Ohio military groups are offended.
