Rest in Peace Nanny

Just before midnight Tuesday my Nanny (my maternal grandmother) passed away. She was the matriarch of our family, and had a titanic force of presence when she entered the room. She was a selfless woman, always happy to lend a helpful hand or a caring ear, never expecting anything in return. She was a strong women, a fighter, blessing us with six months of 'extra' time despite a medical prognosis of a couple weeks. It is never enough time, but that addition gave us a few extra birthdays, a few extra holidays, and meant that she was able to meet and get to know her second great-grandchild (and first great-granddaughter). It was not just 'extra' time, but quality time. Time filled with stories, time bringing the family closer, and time to say goodbye.

She is survived by her husband, two children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren (so far). Tomorrow at her services before heading to the cemetery, I fully expect to be surrounded by a almost 100 family-members/cousins, with hundreds more friends paying their last respects. Even those numbers pale in comparison to her direct impact, let alone the ripple effect from her actions in life. Afterwords, we will head to the cemetery and bury her. I fully expect it to be one of the most difficult things I will have ever done, but by religion and family tradition I believe it is the last mitzvah you can ever do for someone. If anyone in this world deserves a mitzvah it would have to be my Nanny.

Rest in Peace Nanny.

Man Pranks New York Into Believing he Was a World Famous Celebrity

Video embedded below.

"One average, normal guy conjured instant celebrity for himself in New York's Times Square by hiring fake bodyguards, paparazzi and an entourage to follow him round the streets of the Big Apple.

Fooling the notoriously savvy natives into believing that he was indeed famous, 21-year-old student Brett Cohen caused a 300 person pile up at 'The Cross Roads of The World' as he posed for photographs with groups of giggling girls.

The slightly disturbing prank was conducted to expose the public's fascination with celebrity and members of the public tripped over themselves to get a peek and a picture with the man at the centre of attention for all the flashing paparazzi's cameras.

14 people stabbed on community-college campus

Time to bad 'Assault Knives' I guess...

http://hotair.com/archives/2013/04/09/report-14-people-stabbed-on-community-college-campus

"It’s a gun- and knife-free zone — in theory. Good lord:

One person has been arrested and another is on the run after 14 people were reported stabbed at the CyFair campus of Lone Star College near Houston Tuesday morning, KPRC reports.

In a statement on their website, Lone Star College warned two armed people were on campus, one of whom had been taken into custody while the second remained at large.

Alan Bernstein, with the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, confirmed the arrest to the Associated Press but could not say how many people had been injured. Officials have released no further information on the person in custody or what led to the attack, though a report from KHOU-TV said a fight led to the stabbings.

Obama tells a Democratic audience that a “fully automatic weapon” was used at Newtown

Not true of course, but why let the facts get in the way of a political push.

http://hotair.com/archives/2013/04/04/did-obama-tell-a-democratic-audience-that-a-fully-automatic-weapon-was-used-at-newtown

"Either (a) O’s referring to a different shooting, which I doubt, (b) I missed a major update to the Newtown story, (c) he knows something we don’t, or (d) he has roughly the same mastery of gun fundamentals as magazine expert Diana DeGette. From last night’s DCCC fundraiser in San Francisco:

Now, over the next couple of months, we’ve got a couple of issues: gun control. (Applause.) I just came from Denver, where the issue of gun violence is something that has haunted families for way too long, and it is possible for us to create common-sense gun safety measures that respect the traditions of gun ownership in this country and hunters and sportsmen, but also make sure that we don’t have another 20 children in a classroom gunned down by a semiautomatic weapon — by a fully automatic weapon in that case, sadly.
Adam Lanza had an honest-to-goodness machine gun on him, not a Bushmaster semiautomatic? That’s … an important detail, but I haven’t heard it mentioned once in the news coverage I’ve seen about Sandy Hook. (Then again, it’s not unusual for the media to overlook certain facts on this topic.) According to every report I’ve seen, including the Hartford Courant’s story just this morning about Connecticut’s new gun law, Lanza carried an AR-15. If O thinks a fully automatic rifle was used — which would explain his recent refrain about “weapons of war” — why is he targeting semiautomatics?"

Dem rep sponsoring gun-control bill seems to think that … magazines can’t be reloaded

Unemployment Rate Falls to %7.6

Sounds like news of an improving economy, but the numbers tell a different story. Job growth is positive, but not nearly enough, and just shy of a half million people dropped out of the work force.

http://hotair.com/archives/2013/04/05/jobs-report-only-88000-jobs-added

The new jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics came in well under even pessimistic expectations. The US economy only added 88,000 jobs in March, while nearly a half-million people left the work force:

Nonfarm payroll employment edged up in March (+88,000), and the unemployment rate was little changed at 7.6 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment grew in professional and business services and in health care but declined in retail trade. …

The civilian labor force declined by 496,000 over the month, and the labor force participation rate decreased by 0.2 percentage point to 63.3 percent. The employment- population ratio, at 58.5 percent, changed little. (See table A-1.)
Needless to say, this is quite a stinker. The jobs added fall far short of the 125K-150K needed just to keep up with population growth. The exodus from the workforce is even worse. The new civilian workforce participation rate of 63.3% is the lowest seen in almost 35 years, since the fall of 1978 — an era not exactly known for a robust American economy.
