New Earth-Sized Exoplanet Found in Star's Habitable Zone
'Habitable Zone' is code for the distance from the star in which there could be liquid water; not far enough to be ice nor close enough to be steam. It is 20 light years away so traveling there and then hearing back from the probe would take some time, but it could be present a very nice target.

"An enticing new extrasolar planet found using the Keck Observatory in Hawaii is just three times the mass of Earth and it orbits the parent star squarely in the middle of the star’s “Goldilocks zone,” a potential habitable region where liquid water could exist on the planet‘s surface. If confirmed, this would be the most Earth-like exoplanet yet discovered and the first strong case for a potentially habitable one. The discoverers also say this finding could mean our galaxy may be teeming with prospective habitable planets.
“Our findings offer a very compelling case for a potentially habitable planet,” said Steven Vogt from UC Santa Cruz. “The fact that we were able to detect this planet so quickly and so nearby tells us that planets like this must be really common.”
Vogt and his team from the Lick-Carnegie Exoplanet Survey actually found two new planets around the heavily studied red dwarf star Gliese 581, where planets have been found previously. Now with six known planets, Gliese 581 hosts a planetary system most similar to our own. It is located 20 light years away from Earth in the constellation Libra.
The most interesting of the two new planets is Gliese 581g, with a mass three to four times that of the Earth and an orbital period of just under 37 days. Its mass indicates that it is probably a rocky planet with likely enough gravity to hold on to an atmosphere.
The planet is also tidally locked to the star, meaning that one side is always facing the star in sunlight, while the side facing away from the star is in perpetual darkness. One effect of this is to stabilize the planet’s surface climates, according to Vogt. The most habitable zone on the planet’s surface would be on the terminator, the line between shadow and light, with surface temperatures decreasing toward the dark side and increasing toward the light side.
“Any emerging life forms would have a wide range of stable climates to choose from and to evolve around, depending on their longitude,” Vogt said."

"We thought Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida reached a low point when he falsely accused his opponent of being a draft dodger during the Vietnam War, and of not loving his country. But now Grayson has lowered the bar even further. He’s using edited video to make his rival appear to be saying the opposite of what he really said.
In a new ad, Grayson accuses his Republican opponent Daniel Webster of being a religious fanatic and dubs him "Taliban Dan." But to make his case, Grayson manipulates a video clip to make it appear Webster was commanding wives to submit to their husbands, quoting a passage in the Bible. Four times, the ad shows Webster saying wives should submit to their husbands. In fact, Webster was cautioning husbands to avoid taking that passage as their own. At some point they will realize that the Tea Party Protesters just genuinely care about the country and do not like the direction it is/was headed. They will also realize that a sizable percentage of the population agree; I am thinking November 2-3.

The public has been wondering for over a year why the case was dismissed. Coates testified why today:
[There is a] deep-seated opposition to the race-neutral enforcement of the Voting Rights Act against racial minorities and for the protection of whites who have been discriminated against.
Coates verified that the DOJ is infested with racially motivated hostility towards equal enforcement of the law. Like me, Coates testified about the history of open and pervasive hostility inside the Voting Section to protecting the rights of white voters. This hostility first emerged in the case against Ike Brown in Noxubee County, Mississippi, going back as far as 2004:
The opposition within the Voting Section to taking actions on behalf of white voters in Noxubee County, Mississippi, … was widespread.
Coates confirmed that senior managers didn’t even want to open the investigation into discrimination against white voters in Noxubee County:
The Deputy Chief who was leading that election coverage asked me: “can you believe that we are going to Mississippi to protect white voters?”
Coates described how his memoranda were doctored by former Voting Section Chief Joe Rich, confirming my testimony as well as an article that appeared here at PJM this week.
Coates also testified that he was reprimanded by Acting Assistant Attorney General Loretta King when he asked attorneys in job interviews if they could enforce the law equally. ... Coates testified he was summoned to the senior political offices for a tongue-lashing by King, and the interview questions Coates was asking had to go:
King took offense that I was asking such a question of job applicants and directed me not to ask it again because she does not support equal enforcement of the provisions of the Voting Rights Act.
King wanted like-minded attorneys who were corruptly willing to turn a blind eye toward racial discrimination committed by national racial minorities. Soon thereafter, Coates was stripped of his power even to interview applicants.

He testified, as I did, that Justice Department attorneys and staff flatly refused to work on cases where the wrongdoer was black:
[An attorney told Coates in] no uncertain terms that he had not come to the Voting Section to sue African American defendants. … One of the social scientists who worked in the Voting Section and whose responsibility it was to do past and present research into a local jurisdiction’s history flatly refused to participate in the investigation. On another occasion, a Voting Section career attorney informed me that he was opposed to bringing voting rights cases against African American defendants … until we reached the day when the socio-economic status of blacks in Mississippi was the same as the socio-economic status of whites living there.
All of the employees Coates discusses here are still employed by the Civil Rights Division.

Coates described the significance of these misrepresentations. He testified:
If incorrect representations are going to successfully thwart an inquiry into the systemic problems regarding race-neutral enforcement of the Voting Rights Act by the Civil Rights Division, problems that were manifested in the disposition of the NBPP case, that end is not going to be furthered or accomplished by my sitting silently by at the direction of my supervisors while incorrect information is provided. I do not believe that I am professionally, ethically, legally, much less, morally bound to allow such a result to occur.
Coates provided even more detail about a disgusting case of racially motivated harassment that occurred in the Voting Section:
A young African American who worked in the Voting Section as a paralegal volunteered to work on the Ike Brown case, and he later volunteered to work on the NBPP case. Because of his participation in the Ike Brown case, he and his mother, who was an employee in another Section of the Civil Rights Division, were harassed by an attorney in that other Section and by an administrative employee and a paralegal in the Voting Section.
The employees responsible for this disgusting behavior should be fired, or should resign in shame. The perpetrators know who they are — and so does the political leadership. They are not fit to work in the Civil Rights Division.

Sophisticated Worm "Stuxnet" Specifically Targeted at High-Value Iranian Assets
There is still a tremendous amount of speculation surrounding the Worm known as Stuxnet. That said, there are a number of things for which a general consensus is forming. Stuxnet is the first known 'Directed Cyber Weapon', or a piece of malware that is specifically targeted toward real-world process. It is also the first known piece of maleware designed to do significant physical damage; that is beyond just causing havoc with the software/programing, but destroy the physical components of the target. A successfully attacked target could not simply be reset or reprogrammed, it would have to be physically repaired or replaced [think instead of a virus corrupting the operating system it caused your computer to overheat and melt].
The target appears to be Iran; more specifically the Bushehr nuclear power plant and/or the Natanz uranium enrichment plant. There is some evidence to show it is having a desired effect. Reports show a slowdown in Iran's enrichment blamed on 'technical problems' that the operators have not been able to fix.
If the target is Iran, the list of possible perpetrators or creators of the Stuxnet worm is short. Israel takes the first nine spots on the list of ten 'suspects' with the United States being the tenth. That assumes the experts are correct and the program is to complex to have been created by a lone hacker or even a group of hackers not supported by a nation state.
I look at all of this and I see a warning shot. Israel wants Iran to know that it can reach out and touch it in more ways then one. Israel wants Iran to know that it can use its own infrastructure against it. This attack did not hurt nor endanger anyone, but the same technology could be used to devastating effects if the creator desired. The leap from shutting down a centrifuge to shutting down a few cooling unit back ups (to create a melt down) is likely insignificant. The warning thus becomes that Israel will do what ever it has to to ensure its survival; if shutting down some equipment is insufficient, they can just as easily make the land surrounding the power plant uninhabitable from an intentionally created 'technical glitch'.
This should also be another wake up call the the US federal government. Cyber security is becoming increasingly important and it is time to create (or hopefully just upgrade) some serious defenses. Having a few cyber weapons of our own would be wise for a quick counter strike.

All the leaked reports agreed on three points:
1. Stuxnet is the most advanced and dangerous piece of Malware every devised.
2. The experts don't believe any private or individual hackers are capable of producing this virus, only a high-tech state such as America or Israel.
3. Although Stuxnet was identified four months ago, the only servers known to have been affected and seriously damaged are located in Iran.

This attack did not hurt nor endanger anyone, but the same technology could be used to devastating effects if the creator desired. The leap from shutting down a centrifuge to shutting down a few cooling unit back ups (to create a melt down) is likely insignificant. The warning thus becomes that Israel will do what ever it has to to ensure its survival; if shutting down some equipment is insufficient, they can just as easily make the land surrounding the power plant uninhabitable from an intentionally created 'technical glitch'.
This should also be another wake up call the the US federal government. Cyber security is becoming increasingly important and it is time to create (or hopefully just upgrade) some serious defenses. Having a few cyber weapons of our own would be wise for a quick counter strike.

All the leaked reports agreed on three points:
1. Stuxnet is the most advanced and dangerous piece of Malware every devised.
2. The experts don't believe any private or individual hackers are capable of producing this virus, only a high-tech state such as America or Israel.
3. Although Stuxnet was identified four months ago, the only servers known to have been affected and seriously damaged are located in Iran.

"Wednesday in Geneva during the current session of the U.N. Human Rights Council, the Obama administration became a willing participant in the U.N.’s imposition of an apartheid-style ban on representatives of the state of Israel. Despite the promises made by the administration that by joining the Council the United States would not become part of the problem, U.S. Ambassador to the Council Eileen Donahoe chose to attend and fully participate in a meeting that deliberately excluded anyone representing the Jewish state.
Israel is the only U.N. state not permitted to be a full member of any of the U.N.’s five regional groups. Throughout the Human Rights Council sessions, these groups hold key planning meetings in which countries negotiate and share important information behind closed doors. Other full voting members of the U.N.’s lead human rights body include such model citizens as Saudi Arabia, China, Cuba, Russia and Kyrgyzstan.

O’Donnell explained that “when I go to Washington, D.C., the litmus test by which I cast my vote for every piece of legislation that comes across my desk will be whether or not it is constitutional.” How weird is that, I thought. Isn’t it a court’s job to determine whether or not something is, in fact, constitutional? And isn’t that sort of provided for in, well, the Constitution?
Short answer: Senators swear an oath to uphold the Constitution. Of course they are obligated to determine whether a bill they are considering is constitutional. Where did Lithwick get the idea that courts, and only courts, should be concerned with the constitutionality of legislation?
Somewhat longer answer: The Constitution doesn’t vest the authority to determine the constitutionality of legislation in any single branch of the government. In fact, not only does the Constitution not grant the judiciary the exclusive power to consider the constitutionality of legislation, it doesn’t speak of judicial review at all. I think that judicial review is implicit in the Constitution, for the reasons stated by Chief Justice Marshall in Marbury v. Madison. But there is no contradiction between allowing the Court to exercise its authority in its own sphere (i.e., when a lawsuit comes before the Court) while the other branches determine the constitutionality of legislation in their own spheres.

We could be looking at a very interesting case coming down the pipes. Then again, the article points out that the last time this arose (that one involving Verizon) the company opted not to block the messages.

The Bellevue, Washington-based wireless service is being sued by a texting service claiming T-Mobile stopped servicing its “short code” clients after it signed up a California medical marijuana dispensary. In a court filing, T-Mobile said it had the right to pre-approve EZ Texting’s clientele, which it said the New York-based texting service failed to submit for approval.
EZ Texting offers a short code service, which works like this: A church could send its schedule to a cell phone user who texted “CHURCH” to 313131. Mobile phone users only receive text messages from EZ Texting’s customers upon request. Each of its clients gets their own special word.
T-Mobile, the company wrote in a filing (.pdf) in New York federal court, “has discretion to require pre-approval for any short-code marketing campaigns run on its network, and to enforce its guidelines by terminating programs for which a content provider failed to obtain the necessary approval.”"

Major Health Insurers to Stop Offering New Child-Only Policies
This really should not come as a surprise to people paying attention during the ObamaCare debate. When government regulations force a company to take/risk a significant loss or discontinue a service they will choose the latter.

"Some of the country's most prominent health insurance companies have decided to stop offering new child-only plans, rather than comply with rules in the new health-care law that will require such plans to start accepting children with preexisting medical conditions after Sept. 23.
The companies will continue to cover children who already have child-only policies. They will also accept children with preexisting conditions in new family policies."

“We have millions and millions of illegal immigrants in our country, undocumented individuals, who are working, who are doing things we need done in this country,” he told NBC’s David Gregory on Sunday. “They’re all over my house, doing things, making repairs. I’m sure you’ve seen them at your house.
Today:
“I don’t hire illegal immigrants,” he said in the clarifying statement. “On Meet the Press yesterday, I referred to illegal immigrants working around my house. I was referring to the many service contractors who work in my neighborhood, using mostly immigrant workers, who do good work. Some may well be “illegal.”
Yesterday, he hired them knowingly and they were “all over” his house.
Today, he doesn’t hire them at all and they are simply “in [his] neighborhood.”

Biden Gets The Line of Succession Wrong
Having not seen a clip I suspect (hope) that he meant he was second behind Obama; in other words that Obama is first being the president and he is second meaning next or right behind Obama.
