2012 Comes to a End

As we prepare to usher in 2013, here is hoping your 2012 was more interesting than your 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008. I also hope that found someone new who you would carry and who would carry you.

Just as I have encouraged for the last few years; think about what you have done this past year and what you might have have done differently, not to live in regret but as a guide for the coming year. With the year coming to a close, so does your chance of living it to the fullest. The lucky among us will have the full coming year to try again. Stop putting off what you really want to do, because you never know when not being able to do it will stop being a voluntary choice and just becomes your new reality.

Demand A Plan - Demand Celebrities Go F*CK Themselves!

Video embedded below.

"So as I thought about it more I started thinking this video was in fact fair, and not a mistake. If these celebrities want to install Precrime laws criminalizing otherwise-lawful activities on the notion that We Must Do Everything Possible to stop all contributing factors to killings... They should take a look at themselves.

They certainly have done an awful lot of PR work for the Gun as Totem Bestowing Power on the Impotent. They've depicted the gun -- unrealistically, fantastically -- as a Magic Wand that grants its owner the heroic ability to Win and Impose His Will on Any Situation.

And that belief is just as necessary to the mass killing of six year old children as the gun itself. Normal people do not murder 20 children.

It wasn't only the gun that was needed for this killing; it was also the psychological state of believing in The Gun as an agent of Power and Deliverance.

And that came from Hollywood.

Now I wouldn't indulge in either of these awful and stupid precrime measures. I would not repeal the First Amendment just as I wouldn't repeal the Second.

But if Hollywood's calling for one precrime prohibition, it is duty-bound to call for the other as well.

After all -- the children. The children that they were responsible for killing.

Senate Republicans refuse to confirm Kerry until Hillary testifies about Benghazi

Interesting gambit...

"Isn’t this pushing a jinx? If Senate Republicans insist on having Hillary Clinton testify before allowing John Kerry’s confirmation to proceed, aren’t they risking a torn ACL or turf toe for the outgoing Secretary of State?

Clinton has pledged to remain in the job until Kerry is confirmed, which Obama said he was confident would happen “quickly.” The Senate is expected to take up Kerry’s nomination in early January, but multiple Republican senators have already said they won’t agree to a vote on Kerry’s nomination until Clinton testifies about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi. Illness and a concussion has prevented Clinton from appearing thus far.

Clinton promised to appear before Congress at one point, but the State Department backpedaled from that position quickly after it became public. State then said that Clinton couldn’t testify until after Congress received the report from the Accountability Review Board’s investigation into Benghazi, which they hinted Congress might not see for another 90 days — or possibly never see in its entirety. They got the ARB report last week, at which point State announced the resignations of four officials who never actually resigned at all. Accountability!

Senator Michael Crapo (R) Arrested on Charges of DUI

"Senator Michael D. Crapo of Idaho was arrested early Sunday and charged with driving under the influence in a suburb of Washington, D.C., the authorities said.

Mr. Crapo, a Republican, was pulled over after his vehicle ran a red light, the police in Alexandria said. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested about 12:45 a.m., said a police spokesman, Jody Donaldson, and then was taken to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond about 5 a.m.

“There was no refusal” to take sobriety tests, Mr. Donaldson said, and “no accident, no injuries.”

“Just a traffic stop that resulted in a D.U.I.,” he said.

The police said Mr. Crapo, who was alone in his vehicle, had registered a blood alcohol content of 0.11 percent. The legal limit in Virginia is 0.08 percent.

Andrew Cuomo (D) - 'Gun Confiscation Could be an Option'

Sometimes that 'P' word used to describe when you think people are out to get you is not paranoid, but perceptive.

Video embedded below.

"“No one is coming for your guns.” You’re all just being paranoid, disingenuous or worse. All we’re talking about is making little children safer. There’s not going to be anybody kicking down your doors.

(Of course, some very high profiles voices on the Left don’t seem to be able to stay on message.)

But over at National Review, Eliana Johnson proves yet again the wisdom of my dear old Dad. Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they’re not out to get ya.

In a radio interview on Thursday with Albany’s WGDJ-AM, New York governor Andrew Cuomo said that he plans to work with state legislators next month to submit a proposal for new gun-control laws; in particular, Cuomo said, “our focus is assault weapons,” because current state laws regulating the weapons “have more holes that Swiss cheese.”

“I don’t think legitimate sportsmen are going to say, ‘I need an assault weapon to go hunting,’” he said.

Cuomo continued, “Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”

David Gregory (NBC) Mocks LaPierre (NPR) For Proposing Armed Guards in Schools While Sending his Kids to a High-Security School

Protection for he, but not for thee...

"David Gregory mocked the NRA's Wayne LaPierre for proposing that armed guards be at every school in America. But the NBC host seems to have no problem with armed guards protecting his kids everyday where they attend school in Washington, D.C.
The NBC host would go on the rest of the segment to suggest that armed guards might not be effective in preventing mass murders at school. Which is perhaps an interesting theoretical argument.

But when it comes to Gregory's own kids, however, they are secured every school day by armed guards.

The Gregory children go to school with the children of President Barack Obama, according to the Washington Post. That school is the co-ed Quaker school Sidwell Friends.

According to a scan of the school's online faculty-staff directory, Sidwell has a security department made up of at least 11 people. Many of those are police officers, who are presumably armed.

Moreover, with the Obama kids in attendance, there is a secret service presence at the institution, as well.

Did David Gregory (NBC) Violate DC Gun Laws on National TV

Laws are for the little people...

Video embedded below.

"As blog The Patriot Perspective pointed out, Gregory’s demonstration may itself have been a violation of existing D.C. gun law, where “Meet the Press” tapes. “No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. A ‘large capacity ammunition feeding device’ means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition,” D.C. code states. Violations may include a $1,000 fine or imprisonment for up to a year. A representative from NBC did not immediately return an emailed request for comment."

Obama Pushes For Gun Control

The Assault Weapons bad was a bad idea, and it seems immensely likely that whatever new (or old) ideas they put forth will at least be as equally boneheaded.

It is illegal to kill someone in cold blood. Anyone not deterred by their own morals or the law against murder would almost certainly not be deterred from picking up a rock and caving in someone's head by a second law that makes it illegal to kill with a rock. The rock law, in gun control terms, only assures that the potential law abiding victim will not be able to defend themselves.

Daniel Inouye (D), Longtime Senator From Hawaii, Dies At The Age Of 88

Longtime Senator, and seriously Kick-*ss war hero.

"Inoyue didn't just throw grenades at the Germans, he threw one after he lost his prying it out of the hand on his nearly amputated arm.

"I looked at it, stunned and disbelieving. It dangled there by a few bloody shreds of tissue, my grenade still clenched in a fist that suddenly didn't belong to me anymore," Inouye wrote in his 1967 autobiography, "Journey to Washington," written with Lawrence Elliott.
Inouye wrote that he pried the grenade out of his right hand and threw it at the German gunman, who was killed by the explosion. He continued firing his gun until he was shot in the right leg and knocked down the hillside. Badly wounded, he ordered his men to keep attacking and they took the ridge from the enemy.

Hillary Clinton Sustained Concussion After Fainting

"Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who skipped an overseas trip this past week because of a stomach virus, sustained a concussion after fainting, the State Department said Saturday.

The 65-year-old Clinton, who's expected to leave her job soon, was recovering at home after the incident last week and is being monitored by doctors, according to a statement by aide Philippe Reines.

Obama Issues a Statement on The School Shooting in Newtown, Connecticut

Video embedded below.

Your Permanent Record is Now Available on Demand

Good thing a Republican is not president, or this might be considered an unconstitutional infringement on our liberties.

"Remember when government needed something called a warrant or even probable cause to look at your records? Good times, good times. I’m nostalgic for the halcyon days of, er, February of this year, before the Attorney General of the United States signed off on an order allowing the government to access pretty much everything it wanted in the name of counterterrorism. The Wall Street Journal found out about the order and got a FOIA request to force its exposure:

Top U.S. intelligence officials gathered in the White House Situation Room in March to debate a controversial proposal. Counterterrorism officials wanted to create a government dragnet, sweeping up millions of records about U.S. citizens—even people suspected of no crime.

Not everyone was on board. “This is a sea change in the way that the government interacts with the general public,” Mary Ellen Callahan, chief privacy officer of the Department of Homeland Security, argued in the meeting, according to people familiar with the discussions.

A week later, the attorney general signed the changes into effect.

Through Freedom of Information Act requests and interviews with officials at numerous agencies, The Wall Street Journal has reconstructed the clash over the counterterrorism program within the administration of President Barack Obama. The debate was a confrontation between some who viewed it as a matter of efficiency—how long to keep data, for instance, or where it should be stored—and others who saw it as granting authority for unprecedented government surveillance of U.S. citizens.

The rules now allow the little-known National Counterterrorism Center to examine the government files of U.S. citizens for possible criminal behavior, even if there is no reason to suspect them. That is a departure from past practice, which barred the agency from storing information about ordinary Americans unless a person was a terror suspect or related to an investigation.

Now, NCTC can copy entire government databases—flight records, casino-employee lists, the names of Americans hosting foreign-exchange students and many others. The agency has new authority to keep data about innocent U.S. citizens for up to five years, and to analyze it for suspicious patterns of behavior. Previously, both were prohibited. Data about Americans “reasonably believed to constitute terrorism information” may be permanently retained.
Well, hey, we can trust the American government to handle this properly, soberly, and with caution, right? At least the data will stay with accountable US officials. Whew. That’s a load off of my mind — er, what’s that? Um …

The changes also allow databases of U.S. civilian information to be given to foreign governments for analysis of their own. In effect, U.S. and foreign governments would be using the information to look for clues that people might commit future crimes.

“It’s breathtaking” in its scope, said a former senior administration official familiar with the White House debate.
The good news: Saudi Arabia might now have all of our firearm registration data. What could go wrong?

Hero Doctor Who Helped us Find Bin Laden is Now Being Tortured in a Pakistani Prison

Is this really how we take care of our friends...

"Dr. Shakeel Afridi, the jailed CIA informant who helped hunt down Usama Bin Laden, has recently been tortured in prison, the doctor’s family members told Fox News.

“I was told by a prison source that Shakeel and two guards were subjected to torture by jail administration sometime in November,” Jamil Afridi, the brother of the jailed doctor, told Fox News in a recent interview. Jamil Afridi said he had been told about the torture on Nov. 21, when he tried to visit his brother in jail but was turned away, and in a follow-up court hearing on Nov. 22.

“His privileges have been revoked and he’s been shifted to another cell,” Jamil said. “They are strict with him, and treating him inhumanely.”

Jamil Afridi, who has not been allowed to visit his brother, was reluctant to describe the details of how his brother may have been tortured, saying he feared his communications are being monitored by Pakistani authorities. But a cousin and member of Dr. Afridi's legal counsel backed Jamil’s claims.

ESPN Suspends Rob Parker For Questioning Robert Griffin III's 'Blackness'

Alternative headline, Rob Parker fired for being a race bating idiot.

"An ESPN commentator who questioned whether Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was a “cornball brother” has been suspended.

ESPN’s Rob Parker’s comments on yesterday’s “First Take,” which questioned Griffin’s standing as a black man due to his white fiancée and the quarterback’s rumored Republican leanings, has led to the commentator’s suspension. Shortly after Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch broke the news of Parker’s suspension via Twitter, ESPN made a statement on the issue.

“Following yesterday’s comments, Rob Parker has been suspended until further notice,” ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys tweeted. “We are conducting a full review.”

The suspension comes amid an uproar concerning Parker’s comments on the morning show that were directed at Griffin not for his on-field play, but for his standing in the black community.

Horror in Connecticut as School Shooting Leaves 20 Children And Seven Adult Victims Dead

It takes a special kind of monster to look little elementary school children in the eye and then shoot them. By the numbers it is the second worst school shooting in the US (behind Virginia Tech), but there is something that is just that much worse killing children so young.

There really are no words.

US Marine Jailed in Mexico Trying to Register an Antique Shotgun at The Boarder

This is unquestionably a travesty of justice.

The Marine was going on a hunting trip to help with his PSD from serving in Iraq. He wanted to bring his grandfather's antique shotgun. He declares it on the US side of the boarder, is given the 'all clear' and told to register it on the Mexican side. When he goes to register it on the Mexican side they throw him in jail. That was four months ago and has included threats / extortion attempts against his parents and being chained down to a bed.

It is long past time to secure this Marine's freedom and bring him back home.

Video embedded below.

"Even though a U.S. border agent in Brownsville, Texas, had assured Hammar the gun was legal as long as he declared it to Mexican authorities, he was nabbed just across the border, and charged with an aggravated felony punishable up to 15 years in prison. While in prison, Hammar has been repeatedly threatened and, according to reports, left chained for days to a steel bed. But it was the call, just two days after their son's arrest, that continues to haunt Hammar's parents. They believe their son's service to his country -- memorialized forever by a "USMC" tattoo on his arm, made him a target behind bars."

Susan Rice Drops Out of Consideration For Secretary of State

She was never making it past the Senate, and the attempt would have brought Benghazi back to the front page.

"On Thursday I asked that President Obama no longer consider me for the job of secretary of state. I made this decision because it is the right step for this country I love. I have never shied away from a fight for a cause I believe in. But, as it became clear that my potential nomination would spark an enduring partisan battle, I concluded that it would be wrong to allow this debate to continue distracting from urgent national priorities — creating jobs, growing our economy, addressing our deficit, reforming our immigration system and protecting our national security.

These are the issues that deserve our focus, not a controversy about me. On Sept. 16, when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was unavailable after a grueling week, the White House asked me to appear on five Sunday talk shows to discuss a range of foreign policy issues: the protests against our diplomatic facilities around the world; the attack in Benghazi, Libya; and Iran’s nuclear program.

Michigan Governor Signs Right to Work Bill Into Law

"Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has signed a right-to-work bill limiting union power into law in his state, he announced in a press conference on Tuesday evening.

"I view this as an opportunity to stand up for Michigan's workers—to be pro-worker," Snyder said.

"I don't view this as anti-union at all...I believe this is pro-worker."

Earlier on Tuesday the GOP controlled state house approved a law that would make the payment of union dues voluntary for private-sector unions and most public-sector unions (police and firefighters would be exempt.) The bill was approved by a vote of 58-51.

North Korea Launches Long Range Rocket, Declares Launch a Success

Those claims are as of yet unconfirmed.

"North Korea defied international warnings and fired a long-range rocket Wednesday, the second launch under its new leader and a clear sign Pyongyang is pushing forward with its quest to develop the technology needed to deliver a nuclear warhead.

Pyongyang’s state media quickly claimed that the country had successfully put a peaceful satellite into orbit with its long-range Unha-3 rocket — the North’s stated goal of the launch. But South Korea and Japan said they couldn’t immediately confirm that. The launch was something of a surprise, as North Korea had indicated technical problems with the rocket and recently extended its launch window to Dec. 29.

Syrian Rebels Appear to Show They Have Chemical Weapons Too

Bad news for humanity, but good news for Assad. With more weapons floating around in that chaos there is more of a chance a terrorist group could get their hands on them. For Assad, it gives him a scapegoat if he does decide to use or sell them.

"According to a video reportedly posted by the Free Syrian Army, the Syrian rebels have their own chemical weapons to match Bashar Al-Assad’s – and you get to watch two rabbits die to prove it.

This link is to the video posted at YouTube. But Breitbart has helpfully loaded the video to its post on the topic today, so you don’t have to sign in at YouTube to watch it. Warning: graphic content.

After apparently setting off the chemical agent in a glass box containing the hapless rabbits, the speaker in the video issues this warning (translation cited at Breitbart):

You saw what happened? This will be your fate, you infidel Alawites, I swear by ALLAH to make you die like these rabbits, one minute only after you inhale the gas.
Breitbart speculates that the chemical used on the rabbits is a nerve gas, due to its observable effects. That’s a good guess. The close-ups early in the video, of potassium chlorate and sodium nitrite containers, show explosive agents that could be used to disperse the toxic chemical. This latter is actually interesting, as it seems to suggest that the rebels or their terrorist compadres have the capability to build their own chemical weapons.

Unemployment Rate Drops to 7.7%

It appears that we are continuing to discourage our way to a recovery.

"The US got a better November than some had expected in the job markets — but only in the top line numbers. The economy added 146,000 jobs, better than expected if still a status quo result, and the jobless rate declined to 7.7%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that Hurricane Sandy ended up having little impact on employment over the month. However, the work force declined again and drifted back to generational-low numbers:

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 146,000 in November, and the unemployment rate edged down to 7.7 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment increased in retail trade, professional and business services, and health care.

Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the Northeast coast on October 29th, causing severe damage in some states. Nevertheless, our survey response rates in the affected |states were within normal ranges. Our analysis suggests that Hurricane Sandy did not substantively impact the national employment and unemployment estimates for November.

The unemployment rate edged down to 7.7 percent in November. The number of unemployed persons, at 12.0 million, changed little. (See table A-1.)

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (7.2 percent), adult women (7.0 percent), teenagers (23.5 percent), whites (6.8 percent), and Hispanics (10.0 percent) showed little or no change in November. The unemployment rate for blacks (13.2 percent) declined over the month. The jobless rate for Asians was 6.4 percent (not seasonally adjusted), little changed from a year earlier. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)
The U-6 figure also dropped by two-tenths of a point to 14.4%, its lowest level all year. However, the seasonally-adjusted labor force dropped by 350,000, and the civilian labor force participation rate also dropped two-tenths of a point to 63.6%, almost at the 31-year low hit in August. The employment-population ratio dropped by one-tenth of a percent to 58.7%.

Israeli 'Vulture Spy' for Israel Caught in Sudan

Vulture spy, as in a vulture the Israelis have somehow trained to spy on Sudan. You know, because clearly that is the most efficient and effective way to spy on the Sudanies.

Those dam tricky Jews!!!11!!1!!

"Officials in Sudan say they have captured an electronically-tagged vulture suspected of being dispatched by Israel on a spying mission.

The avian discovery was made in Kereinek, a town in the Darfur region of western Sudan, Israeli media have reported.

Sudanese officials are said to have concluded that the bird was a secret agent after discovering it was fitted with GPS and solar-powered equipment capable of broadcasting images via satellite, according to Haaretz newspaper, which cited an Egyptian website, El Balad.

The vulture also had a tag attached to its leg with "Israel Nature Service" and "Hebrew University, Jerusalem", leading to accusations that it was on an Israeli surveillance mission.
Israeli officials have acknowledged that the bird, which can fly up to 375 miles a day, had been tagged with Israeli equipment but insisted it was being used to study migration patterns.

Ohad Hazofe, an ecologist with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, told the website, Ynet, that it was one of 100 vultures fitted in October with a GPS system equipped to take distance and altitude readings but not surveillance images.

White House Planning to Only Change Withholding For 'Rich; if US Falls Off Fiscal Cliff

Like most other plans in DC, this would only act as a stop gap. It would stop people from feeling the tax increase at first, but at the cost of a serious balloon tax payment due at the end of the year many may never see coming.

"The White House has the power to temporarily protect taxpayers from middle-class tax hikes even as upper income rates rise if Congress does nothing and all of the Bush-era tax rates expire in January.

Experts and lawmakers alike agree that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has the power to adjust how much is withheld from paychecks for tax purposes — for all taxpayers or just for some.

By doing so, Geithner could ensure paychecks reflect the White House position that wealthier taxpayers with annual income higher than $250,000 see their taxes rise. Geithner at the same time could leave withholding tables where they are for the middle class, ensuring those workers don’t see a higher cut from their paychecks.
The tactic could buy Washington precious time to strike a tax agreement without pinching the economy, but it carries substantial risk. If the administration miscalculates where rates end up, tinkering with withholding could morph tax refunds into hefty bills.

Reid (D) Declines to Bring a Vote on Obama’s Avoiding The Fiscal Cliff Plan

McConnell (R) offered, and Reid punted calling it a stunt. If asking to vote on Obama's plan is a stunt, what would that make Obama's plan...

"On the Senate floor on Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell offered to give Democrats a chance to go on the record and demonstrate just how serious they are about averting the fiscal cliff by proposing a vote on the package that President Obama proposed last week.
And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s response to this reasonable request? How dare these Republicans ask us to vote on a bill carefully designed and touted by our party leader — it’s a stunt, I say! A stunt!

Judge Orders Deadbeat Dad Of Nine (With Six Women) To Stop Procreating

Could this really pass muster as a constitutional order?

"The Wisconsin man, who has fathered nine children with six women, was ordered yesterday to cease procreating until he can support his numerous offspring.

At Curtis’s sentencing yesterday for bail jumping and failure to pay child support, Circuit Court Judge Tim Boyle told the 44-year-old Racine man that his frequent breeding was to be curbed as a condition of his three-year probation term.

Curtis owes about $90,000 total in back child support and interest to the mothers of his children. Pictured in the above mug shot, Curtis will have to wipe out that debt before he can add heir number ten, ruled Boyle.

Mursi Fleas Palace

Revolution part two...?

"Egyptian police battled thousands of protesters outside President Mohamed Mursi's palace in Cairo on Tuesday, prompting the Islamist leader to leave the building, presidency sources said.

Officers fired teargas at up to 10,000 demonstrators angered by Mursi's drive to hold a referendum on a new constitution on December 15. Some broke through police lines around his palace and protested next to the perimeter wall.

The crowds had gathered nearby in what organizers had dubbed "last warning" protests against Mursi, who infuriated opponents with a November 22 decree that expanded his powers. "The people want the downfall of the regime," the demonstrators chanted.

Chemical Weapons on The Move in Syria

I doubt (hope) that Assad would no be foolish enough to use chemical weapons as a last gasp to hold on to power. Few other actions would cause external intervention (read US and others taking military action) to force Assad out. What I fear may be more likely is that they are being handed off to different terrorist organizations or for some favor from one of their neighbors.

"There have been reports of suspicious activity at chemical weapons sites, but who knows what it real and not real.

One thing is for sure, chemical weapons cannot save Assad. The second he uses chemical weapons all bets are off with the Israelis, Turks, NATO, and the U.S.

Via NY Times, Obama Administration Warns Syria Against Using Chemical Weapons:

The Obama administration said Monday that it is worried that Syria’s embattled government may be preparing to use chemical weapons against the opposition and warned that doing so “would cross a red line for the United States” and prompt American action.

The White House said that some recent actions by the government of President Bashar al-Assadwere indicators that such weapons could be deployed soon, following earlier reports that intelligence agencies had noticed signs of activity at chemical weapons sites.

Syria announced again today that it never would use chemical weapons internally:

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said Damascus “would not use chemical weapons, if it had them, against its own people under any circumstances.”

The statement was reported on Syrian state television and Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Which leaves open the possibility of using them against the Israelis, or transferring the weapons to Hezbollah or other proxies, which likely would result in an Israeli response.

Meanwhile, the U.N. is pulling out of Syria, citing instability.

Government Subsidized Green Car Production Halted After Government Subsidized Battery Company Goes Bankrupt (With no Buyer)

Not to worry, I am sure more government 'help', in the form of them finding new and creative ways to set taxpayer money on fire, is just around the corner...

Hillary Clinton Accuses Israel of 'Lacking Generosity And Empathy' With 'Oppressed Palestinians'

Video embedded below.

"Hillary Clinton accused Israel of lack of generosity and empathy in their dealings with the “oppressed” Palestinians.
Hillary made the comments at the 2012 Saban Forum on U.S.-Israel Relations.
From the State Department website:
So, look, I’m not making excuses for the missed opportunities of the Israelis, or the lack of generosity, the lack of empathy that I think goes hand-in-hand with the suspicion. So, yes, there is more that the Israelis need to do to really demonstrate that they do understand the pain of an oppressed people in their minds, and they want to figure out, within the bounds of security and a Jewish democratic state, what can be accomplished.

Power Generating Leg Braces

Watch for this technology to seep into the private sector as it gets smaller and less obtrusive.

"We've seen several designs for military exoskeletons that can boost soldier strength, but these leg braces from Canada's Bionic Power generate electricity on the go.

The PowerWalk system looks like an athletic knee brace and weighs about 1.7 pounds. The braces generate about 12 watts of electricity when the user walks at a normal pace; an hour's walk can apparently produce enough juice to recharge four cell phones.

That's especially handy for soldiers who have to carry up to 28 pounds of batteries on a 72-hour mission to power everything from flashlights to night vision goggles, according to Bionic Power.

While they've been under development for years, undergoing Canadian military testing in 2008, the PowerWalk braces are now the subject of three development contracts from Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), DARPA, and the U.S. Army.

Obama Cuts Pell Grants After Campaigning on Increasing Funding

Did not take long for that election promise to fall by the wayside.

"During the election this year the Obama Campaign released this online ad targeting young voters.
In the ad Obama told American youth that he kept his promise to make college more affordable.

He forgot to tell them he cut Pell Grants.
The information was released this week.
The Examiner reported:

Sorry, college students. President Obama has cut your access to Pell Grants by 33%; he just forgot to mention it before Election Day.

During the recent campaign, President Obama claimed credit for increasing funding to the Pell Grant program, which provides college funds, free from repayment, to millions of students. However, an email sent out Tuesday to some Dallas college students is revealing a detail the President forgot to mention: the time a student can receive a Pell Grant has been cut, by as much as three years. With Pell Grants for the fall semester now dispersed, colleges are informing students of their options, bringing the cuts to light.

The email, sent out by the Dallas County Community College District, informed students of the changes to the Pell Grant program. It revealed that the number of semesters a student could receive a Pell Grant had been cut from 18 semesters down to 12. It is a detail likely unknown to most students; in fact, the cut in grants has gone largely unreported by the media.

Science Can Answer Moral Questions

UN Votes to Recognize Palestine as a Non-Member State

Another shinning example of 'Smart Diplomacy'...

"This has more to do with Palestinian infighting than it does with Israel, and it’s highly likely to backfire. Which means it’s no different from 90 percent of Palestinian political gambits.

You know the UN motto: You can never have too many Israel-hating pro-terrorist states.

[T]he vote offered a showcase for an extraordinary international lineup of support for the Palestinians and constituted a deeply symbolic achievement for their cause, made even weightier by arriving on the 65th anniversary of the General Assembly vote that divided the former British Mandate of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and the other Arab — a vote that Israel considers the international seal of approval for its birth…

A major concern for the Americans is that the Palestinians might use their new status to try to join the International Criminal Court. That prospect particularly worries the Israelis, who fear that the Palestinians might press for an investigation of their practices in the occupied territories.

Another worry is that the Palestinians might use the vote to seek membership in specialized agencies of the United Nations, a move that could have consequences for the financing of the international organizations as well as the Palestinian Authority itself. Congress cut off financing to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, also known as Unesco, in 2011 after it accepted Palestine as a member. The United States is a major contributor to many of these agencies and plays an active role on their governing boards.
The vote was 138-9 with 41 abstentions, and it was indeed the 65th anniversary of Arabs deciding that a Jewish state alongside a Palestinian one was a casus belli, not a “diplomatic solution.” So why’d they do it? Because, with his pal Mubarak swept away by the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas enjoying a new shot of jihadi cred from its latest glorious futile skirmish with Israel, Mahmoud Abbas is a forgotten man in the Middle East. He’ll take this back to the West Bank as proof of his stature, which is one of the reasons why some western nations voted for statehood (or abstained). They’re handing him a counterweight, in theory, against Hamas in the battle for Palestinian legitimacy. Just one problem: Who’s going to explain to the Palestinians back home that tonight’s vote achieved little more than the right to join UNESCO?
Long story short, Muslim regimes and the international left will soon have a new diplomatic tool with which to try to delegitimize Israel and the Palestinian project of ending the Zionist dream will continue to go nowhere.

Feds Shut Down 100-Year-Old Oyster Company, Destroy Some Lives And Dreams

Reagan said it best, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

Video embedded below.

"Hey, no bigs. It’s just a 100-year-old company and California’s only surviving cannery, a sustainable, family-owned operation employing 30 people. The Drakes Bay Oyster Company has been in a seven-year fight with the federal government and environmental groups over whether it’s 40-year lease would be renewed this week. The Lunny family, which owns the oyster farm, was among a group of families that sold their ranch lands to the National Parks Service in the 1970s to protect them from developers, with the understanding they would get 40-year-leases renewed in perpetuity. After buying and operating the oyster farm without incident— they were even featured as outstanding environmental stewards by the National Parks Service— the Lunnys learned in 2005 they were accused of bringing environmental damage to an area the NPS and environmentalists were anxious to designate as the nation’s first federally recognized marine wilderness.

Sec. of the Interior Ken Salazar decided todaythe farm’s lease will not be renewed, despite some support for it from from Sen. Dianne Feinstein and serious questions raised by scientists about the research used to impugn the Lunnys.

Two-Thirds of Millionaires Left Britain to Avoid 50% Tax Rate

I do not know about you, but I am SHOCKED that millionaires are not just sitting there and taking it. I mean, it is as if these people do not want to pay higher taxes and are actually taking steps to avoid them. Who could have possibly foreseen such a thing... you know, except for all of the people warning the politicization in this country that raising taxes will be counter productive.

"In the 2009-10 tax year, more than 16,000 people declared an annual income of more than £1 million to HM Revenue and Customs.

This number fell to just 6,000 after Gordon Brown introduced the new 50p top rate of income tax shortly before the last general election.

The figures have been seized upon by the Conservatives to claim that increasing the highest rate of tax actually led to a loss in revenues for the Government.

It is believed that rich Britons moved abroad or took steps to avoid paying the new levy by reducing their taxable incomes.

Can the feds invite a U.S. citizen to the local embassy for the purpose of killing him?

I am beginning to like this guy (see the first video at the post).

Video embedded below.

"Consider this of a piece with my Greenroom post earlier about strange, dark questions raised by long years at war. The impetus for this one is the news that the State Department tried to reach out somehow to Anwar al-Awlaki in March 2011 and invite him to the embassy in Yemen to formally notify him that his passport had been revoked. Minor problem: The New York Times had reported 11 months earlier that Obama had marked him for death. Go figure that he politely declined State’s invite to appear in person before them. As Politico notes, this was probably some sort of half-assed gesture at due process from the White House, to give him the option of surrendering peacefully and coming home to face (unspecified) charges instead of facing a rendezvous with a Predator. The fact that he was already very publicly known to be targeted for assassination, however, tends to … complicate the surrender process."
