Charges against former Senator Ted Stevens (R) have now been dropped (previous -> Berman Post: Charges Against Former Senator Ted Stevens to be Dropped). Unfortunately, the damage has already been done. The prosecution is likely responsible for Stevens losing the election and as a result helped shape the current make up of the Senate. As the federal judge was dismissing the charges against Stevens, he appointed a lawyer to investigate potential misconduct by prosecutors.
The rare move was justifiable to the judge who said, "In 25 years on the bench, I have never seen anything approaching the mishandling and misconduct that I have seen in this case".
