Iranian Revolution (Day Sixty-Two)

Update (8/15/2009):Berman Post: Iranian Revolution - Over. End of Update:

Mehdi Karoubi said some of the prisoners were tortured to death; "Iran's defeated presidential candidate Mehdi Karoubi said on Thursday that some of those arrested after the June presidential election were tortured to death, his website reported.

"We observe that in an Islamic country some young people are beaten to death just for chanting slogans in (the post- election) protests," Karoubi's Etemademelli website said.

Karoubi said on Sunday that some protesters, men and women, had been raped in detention. His allegation was rejected by Iranian authorities as "baseless."

A UN expert has received the claims of prison abuse in Iranian prisons; "A U.N. anti-torture investigator said Thursday he has received credible claims that Iranian protesters detained after the June 12 presidential elections were abused in prison.

The many allegations came from family members, lawyers and released detainees, said Manfred Nowak, an independent investigator appointed by the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.

"I truly believe that these complaints will stand up to scrutiny," he told The Associated Press.

Shirin Ebadi (a Nobel Peace laureate) has asked Ban Ki-moon (UN Secretary General) to visit Iran to witness the abuse the protesters have received and are still receiving; "Iranian Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi on Tuesday called on the U.N. chief to visit Iran to receive a first-hand account of human rights abuses and warned against sanctions because they would hurt the Iranian people.
...
"I ask U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to visit Iran," Ebadi told reporters in Seoul, where she picked up a local peace prize. "He must speak to the families whose members have been arrested or killed."

European countries summon Iranian envoys to condemn the imprisonment of the protesters; "Along with some other European countries, Germany has summoned Iran's envoy to protest Tehran's detention of those accused of involvement in post-election unrest." (http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=103385§ionid=351020101).

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon apparently did not send a letter congratulating Ahmadinejad on his victory, but did send a letter. What the letter said has not yet been revealed; "The United Nations said on Wednesday that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon did not congratulate Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on his contested re-election, reversing a previous statement.

Asked on Tuesday if Ban had sent a congratulatory letter to Ahmadinejad, U.N. spokeswoman Marie Okabe said "yes." But when reporters asked her for details on Wednesday, she said it could not be construed in any way as congratulating Ahmadinejad.
