Iranian Election Viewed as Rigged

The Iranian election is almost universally being seen as rigged. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared an the winner. Riots and protests have broken out across the country. Reports say scores of people are dead, services (especially communication services) seem to have been intentionally disabled. Some witnesses are saying that it looks like the country is going through the early stages of a revolution. Ahmadinejad's rival Mir Hossein Mousavi has been arrested.

Despite all this the Obama administration; "is determined to press on with efforts to engage the Iranian government, senior officials said Saturday, despite misgivings about irregularities in the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad". This looks like a major blunder at a minimum and may be a squandered opportunity.
