NY Times Reveals Reporter David Rohde Had Been Held Captive by Taliban

The New York Times revealed that one of their reporters had been held captive for seven months by the Taliban in Afghanistan and/or Pakistan. They had kept from reporting the story and asked others to do the same "out of concern for the men's safety". The reporter, David Rohde, escaped freeing himself. Many people are drawing comparisons between the NY Times keeping this story a secret for the safety of their reporters, and them not keeping other stories secret which endangered the country (http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2009/06/023866.php).

Their is an interesting, all be it slightly conspiracy, theory over at http://outsidethewire.com/blog/media/what-if-the-ransom-was-editorial.html. They question why the Taliban kept the kidnapping quiet. The thought is that they were trying to negotiate for special coverage from the NY Times. They do not believe the NY Times did, but it is an interesting notion.
