Iranian Revolution (Day Fifty-Nine)

Update (8/11/2009):Berman Post: Iranian Revolution (Day Sixty). End of Update:

Ahmadinejad is reportedly 'purging' the Iranian Intelligence Ministry to stock it with loyal people even though it means sacrificing experienced personnel; "Iran's president has conducted a purge of the nation's intelligence ministry, sweeping aside ranking officials with decades of experience in favor of loyalists, a lawmaker, several news Web sites and a former intelligence chief's son said.

The move, chronicled by news outlets Sunday, underscores the deep rifts and disarray within the highest echelons of the country's security apparatus in the wake of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed June 12 re-election.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan may complicate the protests, or the crackdown (http://niacblog.wordpress.com/2009/08/10/green-ramadan).

"Iranian eyewitness: arrested and imprisoned in Kahrizak camp!" (http://shooresh1917.blogspot.com/2009/08/iranian-eyewitness-arrested-and.html). It is a tough read, but gives you a nice first person account of what is going on.

More claims of rape are coming to the forefront, these focused on the prisons; "An Iranian opposition leader said Sunday that detained protesters are alleging male and female prisoners were savagely raped by their jailers to the point of physical and mental damage.

Mahdi Karroubi, one of two defeated pro-reform candidates in the disputed June 12 presidential election, said he has received the reports of rapes from former military commanders and other senior officials and he called for an investigation.

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran does not believe the claims by Iranian authorities was a result of 'Carelessness' and 'Negligence'; "While Iranian authorities have claimed that abuse of detainees arrested for participating in peaceful demonstrations, or simply on the basis of their political beliefs, has been the result of “negligence” and “carelessness,” the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said the abuse was systematic and reflected a policy of suppressing dissent, intimidating the population, and corroborating charges by producing false confessions.

“Instead of show trials of innocent people, there should be prosecution of those responsible for torturing them, and for the shootings, beatings, and ill-treatment that have resulted in numerous deaths on the streets and in detention, “stated Aaron Rhodes, a spokesperson for the Campaign.

Iranian state TV is reporting that Kahrizak, the prison chief at the center of this, was fired and then arrested (http://www.presstv.com/detail.aspx?id=103006§ionid=351020101).

Iranian authorities are still trying to tie Mousavi to foreign spies accusing him of helping them (http://keepingthechange.blogspot.com/2009/08/press-tv-mousavi-accused-of-helping.html).

Sarkozy is actively working to free the captured French women (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iiOLaZllqCaJlPXVHul3bdrg3QYwD9A02LM00).

Is Russia getting nervous over their choice of backing Ahmadinejad (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2009/08/iran-russia-urged-to-hedge-bet-on-ahmadinejad.html)?

While all of this is going on it is comforting to note that "Sanctions Unlikely to Stop Iran's Nuclear Quest" (http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1915446,00.html).
