Obama Administration Voices Support For Local Gun Laws

In what may be an unaccepted move from the perspective of people who think the Obama administration will become 'gun grabbers', Gibbs voiced support for people legally carrying weapons near Obama events. I do not think this is a signal of policy or opinion shift. A general stance in favor of obeying the law could be an attempt to dissuade some fears without alienating his base. It does not mean that they will not try to change the laws in the future.

"Armed men seen mixing with protesters outside recent events held by President Obama acted within the law, the White House said Tuesday, attempting to allay fears of a security threat.

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said people are entitled to carry weapons outside such events if local laws allow it. "There are laws that govern firearms that are done state or locally," he said. "Those laws don't change when the president comes to your state or locality."
