Iranian Revolution (Day Fifty-Eight)

Update (8/10/2009):Berman Post: Iranian Revolution (Day Fifty-Nine). End of Update:

The Revolutionary Guards once again called for the trial of the opposition leaders and a crack down on the foreign media; "Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday opposition leader Mir Hussein Mousavi should be put on trial for fomenting the unrest that erupted after the country's June presidential election, a news agency said.

"If Mousavi, (defeated candidate Mehdi) Karoubi and (former president Mohammad) Khatami are main suspects behind the soft revolution in Iran, which they are, we expect the judiciary ... to go after them, arrest them, put them on trial and punish them," said a senior Guards' commander, Yadollah Javani, the official IRNA news agency reported.

A senior Iranian military commander meanwhile said that foreign media should be more controlled to preserve the clerical establishment particularly after the country's disputed presidential vote.

It is being described as 'taking gloves off' "But in other signals that the gloves have come off, a senior Guard commander demanded that Ahmadinejad's election rivals Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi face trial, and a military commander urged greater control over foreign media." (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L9709029.htm).

There is an unconfirmed report that Mousavi's arrest has been authorized by Khamenei (http://idiomagic.livejournal.com/154385.html).

The Iranian authorities are targeting protesters with duel citizenship to try to blame the west for the uprising (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/08/AR2009080802471.html).

The Iranian police chief admitted that captured protesters were tortured, and fired the head of Tehran prison; "Iran's police chief admitted yesterday that protesters who were arrested after June's disputed presidential election had been tortured while in custody in a prison in south-west Tehran. But he denied that any of the detainees had died as a result." (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/09/iran-protesters-torture-election). The Iranian judiciary has also acknowledged the torture; "A top judiciary official acknowledged Saturday that some detainees arrested after post-election protests had been tortured in Iranian prisons, the first such acknowledgment by a senior Iranian official." (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/09/world/middleeast/09iran.html)

Is the mass trial backfiring; "Trial of protesters seems only to hurt Iran, analysts say ... The televised proceedings fail to silence the opposition or quell protests, and appear to be damaging the international credibility of the Iranian judiciary and political systems, observers say." (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-iran-trial9-2009aug09,0,3643755.story).

The United States has called for the release of the three captured tourists who accidentally crossed into Iran (http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE5780YX20090809).

Hillary Clinton talks about Iran. First she makes excuses for the Obama administrations inaction and then says that they were actually helping out behind the scene. The only behind the scene action cited was delaying Twitter's scheduled maintenance. It should be noted that Twitter indicated that the State department was not ultimatrly the reason they delayed the maintenance (http://blog.twitter.com/2009/06/up-up-and-away.html).
