Iranian Revolution (Day Twenty-Seven)

Update (7/10/2009):Berman Post: Iranian Revolution (Day Twenty-Eight). End of Update:

Thousands of people took to the streets again today. The authorities predictably cracked down hard. Hard enough that Amnesty International "condemned the excessive use of force by Iranian security forces" (http://www.amnestyusa.org/document.php?id=ENGUSA20090709001&lang=e). See more on the violent crackdown at http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/07/09/iran.protests.anniversary/index.html and http://www.nationalpost.com/story.html?id=1774792.

"There were several demonstrations today reported in Iran.

The police are shooting tear gas at the people. Protesters are shouting "Death to Dicator!"

Clashes are reported in Saatad Abad. Hundreds of protesters are sitting on the ground at 12-e-Farvardin.

2,000 to 3,000 people are moving toward Tehran University and chanting, "Don't be afraid, we all are together."

Clashes are reported between police and people at Ebghelab Square in Tehran.

Saeed Valadbaygi is liveblogging at Revolutionary Road including this horrific report- "The basij are throwing protesters from pedestrian bridges in Shiraz."

Police in Tehran are arresting seemingly at random, throwing tear gas into buses. Hundreds of Protesters are chanting against the regime infront of Ploytechnic University, Near Azadi Square. Police used Teargas against the people and are trying to push them back at Vanak Square. There are protests reported in Tabriz, Isfahan & Shiraz, as well.

The protests today were intentionally set on the anniversary of the bloody crackdown on the student activists exactly ten years ago. I have to let Gateway Pundit explain because he has used Ahmad Batebi (made famous by the July 17, 1999 cover of The Economist magazine) as part of his logo for as long as I can remember.

http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2009/07/ten-years-ago-today-iranians-remember.html

"Ten Years Ago Today-
The Iranian Student Protests of July, 1999 (Also known as 18th of Tir and Kuye Daneshgah Disaster) were at the time the "worst", most widespread and violent public protests in Iran, since the early years of the Iranian Revolution.

They began on July 8, 1999, with peaceful demonstrations in Tehran against the closure of the reformist newspaper, Salam. This was followed by an attack on a student dormitory that night by riot police in which a student was killed. This in turn sparked six days of demonstrations and rioting throughout the country in which at least three more people were killed and more than 200 injured.

Following the riots in 1999, more than seventy students disappeared. In addition, to an estimated 1,200–1,400 were detained, the "whereabouts and condition" of five students named by Human Rights Watch remained unknown, but were believed to be detained by Islamic authorities.

Not only is Obama not taking a stand against Iran, but he apears to be moving in the exact opposite direction; "In January 2007, the US captured five Iranians providing assistance to the Shi’ite extremists in the south of Iran killing US soldiers. ... The BBC reports today that the Obama administration has released them today to the Iraqis as a means of allowing them to go free". Ed Morrissey further explains; "Why do this now? Obviously, it’s appeasement. The Obama administration wants talks with the Iranian mullahs so badly that he’s not only willing to meet with them unconditionally, he’s now fulfilling their conditions to get direct talks. The Iranians had made this an issue every time the subject of direct talks arose.". This is despite apparently being worried that they still pose a threat to us (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D99B2QV81&show_article=1). While this is not directly related to the protests, you would think that should have some impact on the situation.

Obama's a Presidential Approval Index rating has dropped to the new low of –8, though as I have said before it is hard to know how much his handling of Iran is effecting it (http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll).

Sarkozy (French President) says that an Israeli strike on Iran would be a catastrophe (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.a6c27e3843e8f645f9e395649a3a85e5.a61&show_article=1).
