Many Gmail users like to keep their inbox clear by archive emails once they have dealt with them. That used to mean replying to an email using the send button, and then archiving it once you got back to your inbox. Google has taken this two step process and combined it into a single button making it a one step process. If you are interested in using the new button just head on over to you Labs tab (in settings) and turn it on.

"So I decided to turn this idea to a Gmail Labs experiment. Turn on "Send & Archive" from the Labs tab under Settings, and you'll see a new button in the compose form labeled just that. The button does what it says: it sends your reply and then archives the thread with one click."
