Massachusetts House Gives Preliminary Approval to Governor Deval Patrick (D) to Appoint Kennedy's Interim Replacement

Kennedy wanted it (Berman Post: Kennedy (D) Wants to Change Law of Succession, Again), and now the Massachusetts House has given preliminary approval to the state governor to appoint Kennedy's interim replacement. The Democrats are clearly playing politics, and I have little doubt that if a Republican was governor the Democrats would not be doing this. The Democrats have already changed the rule in recent memory to prevent the then sitting Republican governor from being able to replace Kerry should he have had to vacate his seat if he won in 2004. This is not official yet, but is seems that the Republicans can do little to stop it save a massive public appeal.

"The Massachusetts House gave preliminary approval this afternoon to a bill that would allow Governor Deval Patrick to appoint an interim replacement for the late US Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

The House voted 97-58 to send the bill to a final vote before the bill is sent to the Senate, where Republicans are vowing to use every parliamentary maneuver they can to delay it.
