At Obama's address to the United Nations, he seemed to call for a contiguous Palestinian State. The comment has seemingly gone unnoticed but has huge implications. Specifically, Obama called for "Palestinian state with contiguous territory". Look at a map, the only way to connect Gaza and the West Bank is to cut Israel in half. That or 'book end' Israel will a long string boarder around Israel. With the possibility of shooting down Israeli planes heading toward Iran (Berman Post: Zbigniew Brzezinski - 'US Should Shoot Down Israeli Jets if They Cross Into Iraqi Airspace'), continued attacks against 'settlements' (Berman Post: Obama Administration Attacks Israel Over 'Settlement' Construction) taking an even stronger tone in his speech at the UN, resulting in a relationship in tatters (Berman Post: Only Four Percent of Israeli Jews Think Obama is Pro-Israel), this does not seem as crazy a notion as it would have a year ago. That is for a United States president to make such a proposal potentially cutting Israel in half.

ReplyDeleteI can only describe Obamas speech at the viper pit called the UN as fresh warm and fuzzy horseshit from a decrepit horses ass! This man knows how to talk but rarely does he say anything. It has been a useful experiment in race relations but he was not the right "black man" for the job. I think giving him more than one term as president will cause the full on collapse of the USA.

ReplyDeleteA. There are a number of proposals (check out Rand corporation for example) that have found ways to connect Palestinian territories while still keeping Israel contiguous as well. Tunnels, guarded roads with overpasses or underpasses, etc. Use your imagination. How can you be so upset about Israel being non-contiguous, when Palestine has been that way for decades, and even less contiguous due to Israeli-only roads and settlements within the territories.
B. gsw - Israel was not promised peace for withdrawing from Gaza. It was a unilateral withdrawal, and hardly a withdrawal at all considering Israel still has control of the sea, air space and all borders. Even the CIA World Factbook still recognizes it as occupied territory, not a sovereign territory.
Secondly, taqiyyah is not a word, in Arabic or English.
Thirdly, no displacement of Israelis is taking place. You are making up stories. In actuality, millions of Palestinians were displaced.

ReplyDeleteA. - What you are saying is basically having the same piece of land jointly owned. Can you elaborate a bit more specifically on how you picture that working keeping in mind Israel's legitimate security concerns?
It is not a matter of 'being upset'. It is just an absurd notion that Obama can decide to split Israel in half so the Palestinian Territories can be connected. How would that be different then the leader of China telling Canada it needs to give the US land to connect Alaska to the lower 48, other than the fact that the US has not spent the better part of the past 60 years participating in efforts to push the Canadians into the sea?
B. - it is true that Israel withdrew unilaterally, but it did so with the knowledge that the 'occupation' was the cited reason for the terrorist attacks coming from Gaza and that the attacks would stop once they left. They left and the attacks increased. There was displacement of Israelis, some of which had to be removed by force by the Israelis from Gaza. There was also a massive displacement of Jews during the creation of Israel.
Forgetting about the boarder Gaza has with Egypt?

@Anonymous - you have to read more carefully. Bush was very clear that he was referring to the territory within the currently recognized boarders. He was not talking about connecting the two. Obama was not clear; though it is possible that is what he meant. If so, he should clarify that.
