Congress Gets a $4,700 Raise

All across the country people are tightening their belts as congress works furiously to pass a trillion dollar plus bailout they claim will help the faltering economy. At the same time, Congress lets themselves get a raise. While the terminology sounds strange, it is descriptive. Congress no longer votes on giving it self a raise since 1989 when they made the raise automatic. They could have voted to block it as they did in 2007, but they did not. The $4,700 raise brings them from $169,300 last year to $174,000 this year (per person).

This is following the $93,000 per member increase in petty cash (Berman Post: Congress Gives Itself a $93,000 Per Member Raise).
