Is Manhattan Mini Storage Anti-Palin and/or Pro-Choice?

I snapped this photo while riding on the F train (New York City) over the weekend. At first I thought this ad was Manhattan Mini Storage voicing their support of pro-choice policies. Then I thought they might be making fun of Sarah Palin. It was hard to tell if the whole things was just some sort of joke. After poking around the web for a while I came across this (http://www.subwayfox.net/index.php?q=node/297). The pro-choice assumption seems to be correct, though it could all be some strange publicity stunt.

Making political statements can be dangerous for a company as it could alienate some of their customers. Manhattan Mini Storage may just figure that in New York City, most people agree with them so their is no danger. Still, in a competitive environment, it seems a bad idea to knowingly shrink your potential customer base.

Feel free to sound off in the comment section regarding what you think the message is or if it is just a publicity stunt.

  1. Dear Mr. Berman: This is old stuff for Manhattan Mini Storage. A google image search under the company's name shows images with tags like this:

"Your closet's so narrow it makes Cheney look liberal."

    or this:

"Your closet space is shrinking as fast as her right to choose." [abortion, presumably--GK]

    or this:

"Your closet's scarier than Bush's agenda."

Tiresome and irritating? Sure. But where are these ads appearing. In Manhattan, where they are no more out of place than donations under false names are at the Obama campaign. It's a free country, and the oafish owners of MMS can put up what they like. To be sure, they are limiting themselves to a local market by doing so, but that doesn't seem to bother them.

What is irritating is that if a company, call it "Salt Lake Mini Storage," decided to put out ads saying this:

"Your closet wouldn't bear inspection any more than Obama's claim to have written DREAMS FROM MY FATHER by himself."

the press would promptly bawl "Racism!" (TM)and claim it proved that red states are nothing but hicks clinging to God, Guns, and bitterness in equal measure. Bah. It's the bigotry of the press that makes such ads so irksome, not the ads themselves.

    Sincerely yours,
    Gregory Koster
