Should The Baby in The Womb of One of The Fort Hood Casualties Count as the 14th Casualty?

The question of if an unborn child / fetus should be accounted among the killed in the Fort Hood attack is not an easy one. Hasan shot Francheska Velez, killing her, and ending any chance of life her baby still in the womb had at life. This question raises the issue of abortion should be legal, even if you want to avoid it (see also a possible solution to the abortion debate). You can not kill someone/thing that is no alive. Digging up and then shooting a corpse in the head is a despicable act, but it is not murder because the person is already dead and thus you can not and did not kill them. If the fetus is not considered alive, then terminating it can not be considered murder. You can not say that it is not murder for one person to kill someone (the doctor or mother herself) but it is murder for someone else to kill that same thing/person. Other assorted charges may have some differences, but we are speaking strictly about murder here. If the unborn child is considered alive, then abortion would always be a homicide. Politicization have tried to legislate around it, but the underling conflict still remains. Chances are the term you generally use to refer to what is growing in the womb, the terminology I rotated through on purpose, is a good indication of where you stand on the matter. It is something worth thinking about.

"In the massive media coverage following Major Nidal Hasan’s killing spree at the military post, I have heard over and over again about the death toll from the tragedy.

But seldom mentioned is the most hidden victim -- soldier Francheska Velez’s unborn baby. Velez was on maternity leave when she stopped at Ft. Hood, where she and the child she carried in her womb fell victim to Hasan’s bullet.

In the interest of true justice, Hasan should be prosecuted under the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, also known as Laci and Conner’s law, named for the pregnant woman and unborn baby who were murdered in California by Scott Peterson, the baby’s father.
