FCC To Open "White Spaces" to Wireless Broadband Service

The FCC voted to allow the unused and unlicensed sections of the airwave spectrum to deliver broadband internet service. Use of the so called "white space" is something technology company have been pushing for a while. TV broadcasters are expected to sue to stop this saying that it may interfere with television signals. If the suit fails, or they end up not suing, this could be a major advance in internet connectivity.

"The Federal Communications Commission voted Tuesday to open up unused, unlicensed portions of the television airwaves known as "white spaces" to deliver wireless broadband service.

The vote is a big victory for public interest groups and technology companies such as Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. that say white spaces could be used to bring broadband to rural America and other underserved parts of the country.
