John Murtha (D) Dies at The Age of 77

Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha (D) has died from complications of his gallbladder surgery at the age of 77. He was a controversial figure, and his death will not change that, but the story in the near term will focus on his positive accomplishments from his many years of public service.

"Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a longtime fixture on the House subcommittee that oversees Pentagon spending, has died following complications from gallbladder surgery, according to his office. He was 77.
Murtha represented Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District since 1974, making him the chamber's eighth most senior member. According to his biography on the House of Representatives Web site, Murtha was the first Vietnam War combat veteran elected to Congress.
