Son of Hamas Founder Was a Top Israeli Agent

When I talk about the Mossad being a 'ridiculously awesome' (that is the proper technical term) intelligence agency, this is part of what I am talking about.

"The son of one of Hamas' founders served as a top informant for Israel for more than a decade, providing top-secret intelligence that helped prevent dozens of suicide bombings and other attacks against Israelis, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

Mosab Hassan Yousef, dubbed as "the Green Prince" by his handlers, was one of the Shin Bet security service's most valuable sources, Israel's Haaretz daily said. His reports led to the arrests of several high-ranking Palestinian figures during the violent Palestinian uprising that began in 2000, according to the newspaper.

Yousef's father — Sheik Hassan Yousef — was a founding member of the Islamic militant group Hamas in the 1980s. He is currently serving a six-year sentence in an Israeli prison for his political activities.

  1. Its impossible not to be impressed with what the Isreali Government has achieved in terms of creativity, ingenuity in terms of intelligence craft. They are hands down the best in the world, at least in my opinion.

So good in fact that we give them billions of dollars to support this kind of activity, and they send us back their own spies to spy on us.

  2. @Ian Spencer Dubrowsky - I agree that they are the best in the world at human intelligence (getting people on the ground) but think the US is probobly the best technologically.

The billions of dollars we give them is not for their spying activities. A nice size chunk goes to support their military industry and in return we get technologies that help us maintain our military dominance.

  3. The U.S. has notouriously terrible intelligence services, pretty much everywhere our intelligence has been operating has turned into a disaster and bigger problem for us later

we spend far more on our military then the rest of the world, the next biggest spender doesn't even come close. the next biggest navy in the world is the UK. For a country surrounded by oceans and with our wealth and Resources- Israel is hardly a part of our military dominance and hardly a nessescary part of it. Israel is useful to us because they serve as something of an offshore base in the middle east for us, everything they do they are able to do because of the money we give them to develop weapons- money we could be giving our own people to develop things. In fact the united states had a pretty benign interest in Israel before 1967, at which point Kissinger started noticeing so that in 1972 Israel could be armed by us to effectivly keep the arab states in line.

Now that we have a huge presence in the middle east anyway, and Israel does in fact send its own spies to spy on us, as well as share weapons technology in order to gain diplomatic favors, China is an example. The relationship today defines un-equal partnership.

  4. @Ian Spencer Dubrowsky - the United State's human intelligence may leave something to be desired, but our technological capabilities are unrivaled.

If Israel started giving their weapons technology to China it would significantly cut into our military edge. Instead they have collaborated with us either sharing or working on joint projects that have helped us increase that edge.
