Obama signed an executive order lifting a ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. Well, my understanding of the order he reverse, G. W. Bush's order, was that the ban only applied to creating new stem cells. Part of the problem was that Bush's order was not entirely clear. To Bush, and many others, this is an issue about life. Embryonic stem cells are created through the destruction of embryos. Embryos that might otherwise develop into children. Supporters of the research counter that the embryos they use come from 'left overs' created for in vitro fertilization that would otherwise be discarded anyway. People apposed fear some will harvest embryos, that is intentionally creating embryos for the express purpose of destroying them. Those appose also point out that there are other ways to get stem cells that do not require the destruction of embryos.
Obama took the signing as an opportunity to denounce cloning.
