First of The 33 Chilean Miners Rescued

So begins the positive end to an ordeal that no one on the face of the earth (or under it) had ever experienced. Three dozen miners trapped underground after a cave in deeper and for longer then anyone else ever has. By the time the last man is pulled it may cross into day 70, trapped a half mile below the surface.

"The first of 33 Chilean miners returned to the surface in an escape capsule late Tuesday after being trapped a half-mile underground for 69 days.

Florencio Avalos stepped out of a rescue capsule amid sobs from his young son and received a bracing bear hug from Chilean President Sebastian Pinera.

Avalos smiled widely as he hugged rescuers, then Pinera, as his wife, two sons and father looked on. His 7-year-old son Bairo sobbed, as did Chile's first lady, Cecilia Morel. Then Avalos was escorted into a medical triage center for the first of a battery of tests. Cheers of "Chi Chi Chi, Le Le Le!" broke out.
