Mysterious Spiraling Light

Update (12/10/2009): Mystery solved; after looking at the pictures and/or watching the video in this post, click here to find out what it was. End of Update:

I have no idea what this is. My first thought was some sort of hoax but it was taken from too many angles and seen by too many people to be computer generated. My next though was some sort of projector, but I am not aware of anything powerful or sophisticated enough. Failed missile test was next, but the spiral seems to perfect and lasted for to long, not to mention the Russians deny even firing a missile. This happened over Norway, but scientist say it is not related to the Aurora Borealis. Aliens!?!; that would be cool.

Pictures embedded below.

Strange spiral: Residents in northern Norway were left stunned after the lightshow, which almost looked computer-generated, appeared in the skies above them

Curious: A blue-green beam of light was reported to have come shooting out the centre of the spiral

Popular Science points to the only other incident that even comes close;

  1. Until presented with an alternative explanation, I'm going to say it was done by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

  2. It's obviously coming up from the ground, and just as obviously it's machine-generated, because the spiral looks like what happens when you use the 'twirl' effect on Final Cut Pro video... very symmetrical, thus not astronomical at all... I can see a planet or a star looking symmetrically round, but not a light phenomenon like that.

    Someone's hoaxing with some kind of laser light show.

  3. Anyone know if they were conducting any colider experiments during the time of its appearance??

  4. @Anonymous - what do you know that can project into the sky not using clouds without leaving any sort of trail/trace the way you see it in the pictures and video?

  9. Despite the denials, universetoday.com reports that a NAVTEX warning was issued to ships in the area informing them that a missile launch was going to take place. And that's what it looks like- a missile that has lost guidence, spewing fuel.

  11. @michael edelman - missile does seem the most probable, if only by process of elimination, but it still does not fit well given how long it lasted and the way it looks.

    Nobel ceremony.

  17. Ah well, times don't match. Seems published times were 8:45Am, yet some stories seem to say evening.

  18. It's obviously a projection. The real question is who is behind it? Possibly the Obama administration in order to grant him a messianic grace while at Copenhagen (while he suffers from dwindling poll numbers), or an Obama sympathizer perhaps?

  19. This was created by aliens with octogonal prism-shaped bodies beaming through from the 5th dimension across spacetime to hide in the earth's core, and someday finally invade on our futile lives.
