Almost 40 million Americans are now receiving food stamps. That computes to about one out of every eight Americans. This is the highers percentage of population on foods stamps ever.

The Agriculture Department said 39.68 million people, or 1 in 8 Americans, were enrolled for food stamps during February, an increase of 260,000 from January. USDA updated its figures on Wednesday.

The numbers for children are even worse, about 1 in 4. There was a report about this in the New York Times months ago by the way.
