Iran Elected to UN Commission on Women's Rights

It is things like this that make think of the United Nations as a joke, and not a funny one at that. One of the biggest violators of Women's Rights somehow ends up on the Commission for them. This is the country that just announced if it catches a woman with a sun tan they will be arrested. Iran should not be the model for human rights for anyone (Iranian Revolution (GR88)), let alone female equality and the advancement of woman. There is also word that the United States did not object; why?

"Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged "immodest."

Just days after Iran abandoned a high-profile bid for a seat on the U.N. Human Rights Council, it began a covert campaign to claim a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women, which is "dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women," according to its website.
