"But a new book makes shockingly clear just how focused Obama has been on his political future. Via Toby Harnden at the Daily Mail (emphasis added):

Barack Obama has already held more re-election fundraising events than every elected president since Richard Nixon combined, according to figures to be published in a new book.

Obama is also the only president in the past 35 years to visit every electoral battleground state in his first year of office.

The figures, contained a in a new book called The Rise of the President’s Permanent Campaign by Brendan J. Doherty, due to be published by University Press of Kansas in July, give statistical backing to the notion that Obama is more preoccupied with being re-elected than any other commander-in-chief of modern times.

Doherty, who has compiled statistics about presidential travel and fundraising going back to President Jimmy Carter in 1977, found that Obama had held 104 fundraisers by March 6th this year, compared to 94 held by Presidents Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Snr, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush combined.

If these figures are accurate, and apparently they are, I don’t know what is more contemptible: that the most ethical President ever has spent more time raising money than his 5 predecessors combined, or that virtually no one within the mainstream media has seen fit to track and report this. I don’t know, might this possibly have some connection to the fact that President Obama has no legislative accomplishments to speak of over the past year? Just spit-balling here, but this seems like a story angle the media probably would have shown an interest in from say 2001-2008. After all, they seemed pretty interested in tracking the number of rounds of golf President Bush played. But I guess even this is no longer considered newsworthy since, with 93 rounds of his own, President Obama has already exceeded his predecessors total over two full terms by almost a 4 to 1 ratio.

"Scientists found the planet, Gliese 667Cc, orbiting around a red dwarf star, 22 light years away from the earth.

Red dwarf stars are the most common stars in the neighbourhood of the sun, usually hosting planets called gas giants, which are not composed of rock matter.

Re-analysing data from the European Southern Observatory, the astronomers found Gliese 667Cc is a solid planet with roughly four and a half times the mass of Earth.
The University Göttingen and University of California scientists have calculated the planet recieves ten per cent less light from its red dwarf star than the Earth gets from the Sun.

As the light is in the infrared area, the planet still receives nearly the same amount of energy as the Earth, meaning water could be liquid and surface temperatures could be similar to ours.

Astronomers are hailing the plant as the 'Holy Grail' of discoveries, as 20 years ago scientists were still arguing about the existence of planets beyond our solar system.

Obama Campaign Ad Suggests Romney Would Not Have Made The Call to Kill Bin Laden

Preposterous of course, and the quote in full contexts means the opposite of what it does. Interesting strategy trying to undercut the the Republicans on defense, but this looks like it could backfire pretty hard.

"This got pushed by McCain back in the primary of 2007. The late great Dean Barnett inquired into the actual context of the quote (AP only reported what's above) and found that AP was distorting Romney's meaning.

Our own Matt Lewis, showing the innate industriousness that sets Townhall contributors apart, contacted the Romney campaign and got the full text of the interview. Surprise, surprise- turns out the AP did miss some context. The exchange between Romney and reporter Liz Sidoti went as follows:
LIZ SIDOTI: "Why haven't we caught bin Laden in your opinion?"

GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: "I think, I wouldn't want to over-concentrate on Bin Laden. He's one of many, many people who are involved in this global Jihadist effort. He's by no means the only leader. It's a very diverse group – Hamas, Hezbollah, al-Qaeda, Muslim Brotherhood and of course different names throughout the world. It's not worth moving heaven and earth and spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person. It is worth fashioning and
executing an effective strategy to defeat global, violent Jihad and I have a plan for doing that."

So Romney's quote was intended to suggest that we need to do more, not less, in the war on Jihad, and that killing a single man was useful but not sufficient.

This is being turned into "Romney doesn't care about bin Ladin."

Union Sues Indiana, Says Working Alongside Non-Union Employees is Slavery

Apparently they are not kidding. I, however, think it is pretty funny.

"In a lawsuit against three Indiana government officials, a labor union alleged on Wednesday that its constitutional rights under the Thirteenth Amendment — which outlawed “slavery” and “involuntary servitude” — are violated whenever its members are forced to work alongside nonunion employees.

The International Union of Operating Engineers, whose members work as heavy equipment operators, mechanics and construction surveyors, sued Indiana’s governor, attorney general, and labor commissioner in February, alleging that the state’s “right to work” law is unconstitutional.

Indiana’s law prohibits employers from making union membership a condition of getting or keeping a job. The union’s February lawsuit claimed the law violated its members’ Fourteenth Amendment guarantee of “equal protection” under the law.

But an amended complaint filed on Wednesday added a Thirteenth Amendment claim as well. The new lawsuit suggests that when nonunion employees earn higher salaries and better benefits because of the union’s negotiation on behalf of its members, the union has been forced to work for those nonunion employees for free.

And being forced to work without compensation, the union suggested in its revised lawsuit, is slavery.

Flying Thing Propels Itself By Flipping Inside Out

I am not sure what practical uses this will have just yet, but it is mesmerizing to watch work.

Union Says Right-To-Work Law Violates Free Speech ... By Stopping Them From Taking People's Money?!?

What the Union is saying is that they are entitled to people's money, and that people choosing not to be Union Members (and as such not paying dues) is a First Amendment violation. If I did not know better I would think this was an Onion story. By that logic the Union is violating my First Amendment rights by not giving me millions of dollars to buy television advertisements.

This picture comes from yesterday’s so-called “mark-up session” of the Senate Budget Committee, a meeting which chair Kent Conrad helpfully promoted by declaring that he wouldn’t allow any votes to be taken on budgets. That turned the meeting into nothing more than a discussion forum, one that Conrad’s colleagues decided to skip. "Mohammad Ashan, a mid-level Taliban commander in Paktika province, strolled toward a police checkpoint in the district of Sar Howza with a wanted poster bearing his own face. He demanded the finder’s fee referenced on the poster: $100.

Afghan officials, perplexed by the man’s misguided motives, arrested him on the spot. Ashan is suspected of plotting at least two attacks on Afghan security forces. His misdeeds prompted officials to plaster the district with hundreds of so-called “Be on the Lookout” posters emblazoned with his name and likeness.

When U.S. troops went to confirm that Ashan had in fact come forward to claim the finder’s fee, they were initially incredulous.

“We asked him, ‘Is this you?’ Mohammad Ashan answered with an incredible amount of enthusiasm, ‘Yes, yes, that’s me! Can I get my award now?’” recalled SPC Matthew Baker.

A biometric scan confirmed that the man in Afghan custody was the insurgent they had been looking for."

Senate Republicans Join Lawsuit Challenging Obama's 'Recess Appointments' While The Senate Was in Session

"In a double-barrelled blast at President Obama, Senate Republicans today moved to join a lawsuit challenging the White House’s Christmas “recess appointment” of National Labor Relations Board members even though the Senate was technically in session. To handle their case, they hired Miguel Estrada, who in 2002 became the first-ever judicial nominee to be torpedoed by a Democratic filibuster.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said that his side would join a suit brought by Noel Canning, a family-owned business in Washington State that bottles and distributes soft drinks. The company is challenging the NLRB’s determination that it must enter into a collective bargaining agreement with a labor union.

Canning’s suit charges that Obama appointments were not lawful because the Senate had scheduled frequent pro-forma sessions to block recess appointments--which the president ignored. Typically nominations to the labor board would be voted on by the Senate.

“The president’s decision to circumvent the American people by installing his appointees at a powerful federal agency, when the Senate was not in recess, and without obtaining the advice and consent of the Senate, is an unprecedented power grab,” McConnell said. “We will demonstrate to the court how the president’s unconstitutional actions fundamentally endanger the Congress’s role in providing a check on the excesses of the executive branch.”

The fight is over a simple issue: When is the Senate technically in session. The GOP argues that there was enough action over the holidays to determine that the chamber was in session, but the president disagreed and went ahead with the appointments.

"First, the Maldives are on the other side of the globe from the Falklands; they’re in the Indian Ocean. The term Obama wanted — and the one provided by the reporter in the press conference in the question — was Islas Malvinas, the name Argentina calls the British islands in the south Atlantic. Furthermore, the US doesn’t recognize them as the Malvinas; throughout the State Department website, the terms Falklands or Falkland Islands are used, occasionally with Malvinas in parentheses.

There’s a reason for that. The US ended up backing the British in the Falkland Islands war in the early 1980s, albeit reluctantly, because (a) the people who live on the islands support British sovereignty, and (b) the Falklands are over 250 nautical miles from Argentina anyway. The only legitimate claim Argentina has on the islands is traditional Argentinian politics, which these days is being driven by the large oil deposits in the Falklands region. Under the auspices of both history and self-determination, Argentina has no business in the Falklands.

It would be nice if an American President stood up for self-determination, or at least for our ally. But it would be at least something if Obama bothered to learn the names for the geography of the region before pontificating on it.

Obama Administration Pays Female Employees 18 Percent Less Than Male Employees on Average

As a conservative I understand there they could be perfectly logical and non-sexist reasons for the difference. Despite that, for this special case only, I will deffer to my liberal colleague and conclude that the only possible explanation for the pay gap is rampant sexism in the Obama administration.

Why does our president hate women?

Female employees in the Obama White House make considerably less than their male colleagues, records show.

According to the 2011 annual report on White House staff, female employees earned a median annual salary of $60,000, which was about 18 percent less than the median salary for male employees ($71,000).

The Obama campaign on Wednesday lashed out at presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney for his failure to immediately endorse the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, a controversial law enacted in 2009 that made it easier to file discrimination lawsuits…

It is not known whether any female employees at the White House have filed lawsuits under the Ledbetter Act.

Holder Loses Face in 'Face Case'

"The Department of Justice — apparently because it has nothing better to do (like prosecute real cases of voter intimidation or defend the Defense of Marriage Act!) — has filed a number of cases against pro-life sidewalk counselors for alleged violations of the Free Access to Clinic Entrance or FACE Act. Some time ago, I wrote about the case against Dick Retta, a peaceful, prayerful man the DOJ calls a “vocal and aggressive” anti-abortion (a.k.a. pro-life!) protester. The speciousness of the DOJ’s accusations against Retta are representative of the weakness of their arguments in most, if not all, of these cases.

Fortunately, in a recent ruling on a high-profile example of “the FACE cases,” a U.S. district judge called out the DOJ in no uncertain terms for the ludicrousness:

The Justice Department has dropped an appeal in Holder v. Pine against pro-life sidewalk counselor Mary “Susan” Pine, who is represented by the civil rights firm Liberty Counsel. The DOJ has agreed to pay $120,000 for this frivolous lawsuit which, as the evidence indicated, was intended to intimidate Ms. Pine and send a shot over the bow of pro-lifers around the country.

Mr. Holder unsuccessfully sought thousands of dollars in fines against Ms. Pine, as well as a permanent injunction banning her from counseling women on the public sidewalk outside the Presidential Women’s Center (PWC) abortion mill (or any other “reproductive services” clinic).

After 18 months of litigation, the DOJ’s case was thrown out of federal court, and the department was chastised in a scathing ruling by U.S. District Judge Kenneth Ryskamp for filing a case with no evidence.

Judge Ryskamp wrote that Holder’s complete failure to present any evidence of wrongdoing, coupled with the DOJ’s cozy relationship with PWC and their apparent joint decision to destroy video surveillance footage of the alleged “obstruction,” caused the court to suspect a conspiracy at the highest levels of the Obama administration. “The Court is at a loss as to why the Government chose to prosecute this particular case in the first place,” wrote Judge Ryskamp. “The Court can only wonder whether this action was the product of a concerted effort between the Government and PWC, which began well before the date of the incident at issue, to quell Ms. Pine’s activities rather than to vindicate the rights of those allegedly aggrieved by Ms. Pine’s conduct.”

Let’s review Ryskamp’s words, just in case you didn’t catch the full extent of his insinuations: Ryskamp hints at a conspiracy between the Justice Department and the pro-abortion Presidential Women’s Center abortion mill.

North Korean Missile Fails, State Media Acknowledges Failure

There is only one good reason I can think of or have read that would explain why the North Korean state controlled media would admit to such an embarrassing failure. That is because they know the news would get through to the people regardless. They know they can not get away with the 'big' lies any more, but if they fess up they can maintain some level of credibility to use for the 'little' lies.

We should do what we can to press the issue. Open up the lines of communication to the North Korean people as much as possible, but more importantly allow them to communicate with each other securely.

NHS Denies Life-Saving Treatment to The Elderly

This is the socialized system liberals are trying to bring into the country. If I did not know any better, I would think of this as some sort of death panel.

The truth of the matter is that unless the system you create lowers healthcare to the lowest common denominator (read, socialized medicine), there will always be some form of treatment that is out of reach for the masses and only available to a select few. The difference between a government controlled socialism system and a capitalist system is two fold. First, the free market model creates a trickle down where the richer people paying increases the supply of the treatment bring the cost down to levels where everyone can afford it. Second is the controlling force or who makes the decision on who gets the newest treatment or the treatment for which there is not yet enough to go around. The government controlled socialism system gives the government the power to make that decision (read, death panels), while the capitalist system gives individuals that power and chance through their own actions.

Unemployment Rate Drops to 8.2%

"The Bureau of Labor Statistics said that seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 8.2% from 8.3% last month, and the broader U-6 unemployment/underemployment rate dropped to 14.5% from 14.9%, while the economy added only 120,000 jobs overall and 121,000 jobs added in the private sector

The simplest measure of unemployment is to count the number of people who want a job but are out of work, regardless of whether they last searched for work in the prior 4 weeks (measured by the official U-3 rate), prior year (measured by the U-5 rate), or longer than a year ago, and divide that into that number plus the number of people employed. That measurement, unfortunately, has only been possible since 1994.

For March, that would be 18,972,000 (the 12,673,000 officially unemployed and part of the workforce plus the 6,299,000 who are not part of the workforce but who want a job), divided into 161,006,000 (the 154,707,000 officially part of the workforce plus the 6,299 who want jobs). That would put the “simple” unemployment rate at 11.8%.

The good news – that is a tick lower than February’s 11.9% “simple” unemployment rate. The bad news – that is higher than any point between 1994, when this measure was first possible, and March 2009.

Holder Sends 'Judaical Review' Letter to Fifth Circuit

He was not going to double down on Obama's comment, a comment that the administration has been walking back. Two and a half pages when they were told to submit three, has to be a little 'dig'.

Seriously, though, given the immense interest in this story when it broke Tuesday, there was no way O wasn’t going to use the letter as an opportunity to plead his constitutional case on ObamaCare. The court wanted a statement of the DOJ’s position on judicial review but Holder naturally gave them a little more than that. First, the obligatory — and slightly peevish — acknowledgment that, yes, Marbury v. Madison is still good law:

The longstanding, historical position of the United States regarding judicial review of the constitutionality of federal legislation has not changed and was accurately stated by counsel for the government at oral argument in this case a few days ago. The Department has not in this litigation, nor in any other litigation of which I am aware, ever asked this or any other Court to reconsider or limit long-established precedent concerning judicial review of the constitutionality of federal legislation…

The question posed by the Court regarding judicial review does not concern any argument made in the government’s brief or at oral argument in this case, and this letter should not be regarded as a supplemental brief.

Translation: The court should stop wasting time by demanding answers to questions that no one is asking, including the president. So much for judicial review.

On Wednesday, Google gave people a clearer picture of its secret initiative called Project Glass. The glasses are the company’s first venture into wearable computing.

The glasses are not yet for sale. Google will, however, be testing them in public.

In a post shared on Google Plus, employees in the company laboratory known as Google X, including Babak Parviz, Steve Lee and Sebastian Thrun, asked people for input about the prototype of Project Glass. Mr. Lee, a Google product manager and originally worked on Google mapping software Latitude, mobile maps and indoor maps, is responsible for the software component and the location-based aspects of the glasses.

I mean, he’s lobbed a softball to talk about the greatness of America in an election year, and his thoughts instinctively turn to…his own career? And a 15 minute speech focused mostly on himself, the text of which includes over 50 uses of the words ‘I’ or ‘my’?

Minimum Wage Laws Cost San Francisco Their Five-Dollar Foot Longs

Minimum wage laws have consequences. There are always to two sides to the ledger, and forcing employers to pay a minimum amount for workers mean that people or tasks with less value will never be hired. It also means higher priced good, as Subway being forced to discontinue their promotion shows clearly.

"The San Francisco Weekly reports that the Subway sandwich shops in San Francisco have dropped out of the “every day” portion of the $5 footlong program:

It seems you can have the nation’s highest minimum wage and a $5 footlong — but you can’t have them both.

San Francisco Subway patrons hoping to gorge themselves on too much of a mediocre sandwich are being greeted by signs like the one above noting that “due to higher cost of doing business in San Francisco” obtaining a $5 footlong will require a trip over a bridge, through a tunnel, or onto the Peninsula.

The “higher cost of doing business in San Francisco” is, in large part, the aforementioned highest minimum wage of $10.24/hour, $2.99/hour higher than the federal minimum wage, $2.24/hour higher than California’s state minimum wage, and $1.20/hour higher than the highest state minimum wage, found in Washington State. Never mind that the cheap, if annoying, feature of Subway is responsible for Subway’s growth during the recession and now tepid recovery. Never mind that a couple of those subs are actually relatively healthy dietary choices. The leaders of San Francisco have decided that the always-elusive chase for a “living wage” must remain at full tilt, even as those who would otherwise benefit from not being forced on the treadmill have to spend more for basic necessities like food.

Obama Confident The Court Won't Take The 'Unprecedented Extraordinary' Measure of Overturning ObamaCare

The only thing unprecedented would be the new power the Federal government would have if the law is upheld to make you do whatever they want because your lack of action would in some way effect commerce.

The point of the Supreme Court is to ensure faithful compliance to the Constitution, even if a majority would prefer otherwise. We require a super majority, through the amendment process, to override the Constitution to prevent a tyranny of the majority. What we have here is actually the opposite with a majority believing the mandate should be struck down as Unconstitutional.

Judaical activism is either the courts ignoring the law in their rulings or creating brand new law by stretching interpretations beyond any measure of reasonable logic. Not granting the government a new power, found no where in the Constitution, which is the antithesis of our founding philosophy and system of government is not judicial activism.

"If there’s anything novel about the ObamaCare case, it’s the idea of federal power to compel purchases, not the Court’s reaction to it. And what on earth does this mean?

“Ultimately I am confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress,” Obama told reporters today while speaking with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

Obama reminded reporters that conservative commentators, have complained about “judicial activism or a lack of judicial restraint,” that “an unelected group of people would somehow overturn a duly constituted and passed law.”

The “strong majority” in Congress went 219-212 in the House, with 34 Democrats defecting. Not a single Republican in either chamber voted for it, and as Ace notes, the public itself has been steadfastly opposed to the law since day one. Against that backdrop, it’s an amazing show of balls by The One to dress this up as the Court somehow thwarting the people’s will. But even if O-Care really did have a “strong majority,” so what? The whole point of judicial review is to make sure that congressional majorities, strong or not, remain bound by their enumerated powers and the Bill of Rights. You know what law really did have a “strong majority” in both chambers? DOMA. Think there’ll be any tears shed on the left for majoritarianism if Anthony Kennedy cashiers that one on a 5-4 vote?

"This video is a follow-up to Adrian Murray’s facebook post over the weekend, in which he says that he donated to the Obama campaign as “Adolph Hitler,” occupation “Dictator” living at a German address. As you can see in the clip, citizen journalist George Scaggs of Austin tries the same thing at three different campaign sites, that of Obama, Romney and Santorum. Only the Obama site accepted the donation without the verification number.

Let’s take a look at the three campaign websites mentioned in the video

Obama’s campaign implemented the same lack of verification in 2008, but the mainstream media never called them on it. It appears as though that episode has prompted a repeat in 2012.

This means three things are likely true. One, the Obama campaign disabled the verification system. The verification system is turned on on web sites that accept credit cards, by default. I used to manage the website for the Texas Republican Party, so I know this from personal experience. Someone had to take the action of turning it off on the Obama site.

No, it’s not an April Fool’s joke. When Japan officially slashes its rate to 36.8 percent Sunday, America’s will be tops at 39.2 percent.

President Obama has proposed a rate of 28 percent, but Republicans charge that it comes with $350 billion in new, off-setting taxes. The GOP is pushing for a cut to 25 percent, but the election year is getting in the way of any deal.

The Business Roundtable has been pushing for a clean cut in corporate tax rates, claiming it would spur job growth and industrial reinvestment. They even cite a recent move by England to cut their tax rates from 28 percent to 22 percent, which officials called “an advertisement for investment and jobs in Britain.”
